"Rite of Passage" ride...
The BRBC and CCC invite you to the annual "Rite of Passage" ride, Thursday 31 Dec 2009 at 9AM from Greensburg LA.
This tradition ride is a way to mark the end of the 2009 cycling season, and look forward to 2010. Jim Turner and I have been hosting this ride every New Year's Eve since 2001 (maybe longer, ???) in whatever weather. At the end of the ride we will enjoy turkey gumbo, cabbage, black-eyed peas, and whatever you may choose to bring.
Starting (and ending point) is the parking lot just beyond the the LA-10 east truck stop in Greensburg. Ride departs at 9AM so plan accordingly including clothing for the expected cool temperatures and rain. (between 45 and 55 degrees, and between 20% and 50% chance of rain) Course is the same as last year's (see link) and goes to Gillsburg MS and back for 35 miles and 1200 ft of climbing.
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/21530
Best way to get there for CCC riders is I-55 to the LA-10 exit, then west (left) towards Greensburg.
Others take either I-12 east to the Walker exit (LA-447), then north to Walker and a right turn on US-190. Continue to LA-449 turn left, and follow it to the end at LA-37 (make a jog right then left in Pine Grove). At LA-37 turn right to the end in Greensburg, where you turn right again on LA-10 to the truck stop. (1:15 from BR)
If you live North of Florida in Baton Rouge, you can consider Greenwell Springs road (LA-37) which is the shortest way to Greensburg, but if you do be aware of the enforced 45 speed limit in East Baton Rouge Parish.
Call or reply if you need more information, or have additions or corrections.

225 Magazine
Below is a link that will take you to an article, the cover story, published in THE Baton Rouge Magazine, 225, this month. As you know, I'm passionate about cycling and safe cycling advocacy so reading this article was like reading the last chapter of all of my favorite books put together!
I want to thank Jeff Roedel, copied on this e-mail, for the fine job he did in writing this article. It is a splendid representation of the variety and growth of this popular recreational activity in our area. Jeff, we are so fortunate that you were inspired enough by us to write this story. We are most gracious.
Also, I want to thank Nicette Goodier of New Orleans. Because she believed so passionately that something great could come of something so tragic, this has been the most outstanding year for cycling awareness in Baton Rouge and in our entire state. Here's to you, Colin!

225 magazine's November issue...
225 magazine's November issue has a very well done cover story on bicycling in Baton Rouge. Jeff Roedel, the author, spoke to a wide spectrum of local bicyclists and city officials to get this story. David Gallent, the photographer, did a great job capturing many aspects of biking in Baton Rouge. If you get a chance to pick up a copy, take it; it's a good read and very hopeful.

Pennington Biomedical Research Center is conducting a study
Good Afternoon,
Pennington Biomedical Research Center is conducting a study on the behalf of Gatorade Sports Science Institute to examine the effectiveness of a dietary supplement on cycling performance.
Goals of the study
One: To determine whether a new dietary ingredient will increase the use of body fat during exercise.
Two: To examine whether those using the supplement will increase 20 km time trial (TT) performance after a period of strenuous exercise.
Who is eligible?
• Men between 18 and 35 years of age
• Capable of attaining a V02 max: 50 ml/kglmin. This would be equivalent to a good Category IV or Category III+ rider.
• Must be willing to commit to a testing protocol that will last -40-days.
What the test entails
The following tests will be performed before and after four (4) weeks of supplementation:
• A V02max test with the determination of VO2max, lactate thresholds and the corresponding power output associated with each.
• A two (2) hour ride at an established percentage of your lactate threshold. Several blood samples will be taken during this portion of the test; however, we will take no muscle
biopsies.
• A 20 km TT to see how fast you can complete the TT.
Upon completion of the study you will receive:
• $200
• A full report detailing your V02max, lactate threshold, heart rates, and power outputs associated with your test.
• A report detailing your time to complete each time trial along with your average heart rate and average power output during each test.
• Various schwag courtesy of Gatorade
Because of the upcoming holidays we will enroll participants until approximately the 15 of November. Following the Christmas break we will start enrollment again after about 10 January.
If you know of someone who might be interested in the trial, please forward this to them.
Thanks so much for your time and consideration,
Conrad

TRAINED CYCLISTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY
TRAINED CYCLISTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY
Hi! My name is Helena Rietschier and I am a Master's student in the Exercise Physiology department at LSU. We're conducting a cycling study to investigate the effectiveness of a natural carbohydrate source (sun-dried raisins) versus sports jelly beans on promoting endurance performance. The study will involve you cycling on your own bicycle mounted on a Computrainer in our lab. There will be a VO2 max test, a lactate threshold test, and 3 experimental trials in which you will cycle for 2 hours followed by a 10-km time trial. Every 20 minutes during the 2 hour cycling bout, you will receive either sun-dried raisins, sport jelly beans, or water-only. For more information, please contact me (hriets1@lsu.edu). Thanks!!

Photographer at training race
Everyone,
There will be a photographer for 225 magazine at the split today and Thursday taking pictures of the training race for a story the magazine is doing on cycling on Baton Rouge. He also plans to take some pictures from his vehicle as we ride around the loop.
Please make every effort to make it to the training race today and Thursday so we can have as big a group as possible for the picture. Also, for you guys starting from the split, please try to join the training race for a little while before and as we go through the split to make the group bigger.
If you are on a race team, it's probably a good week to wear your kit to get your sponsors some press.
Thanks

Copperas Cove, TX on post at Fort Hood. The Road Races will be on an
incredible 33 mile course, COMPLETELY CLOSED TO TRAFFIC - that's right no

reduce the negative impacts of our two foreign wars. The registration
site also has an option for a tax deductable donation.
To help convince everyone (not just those in contention) to come we've
included a "NonCompetitive" event on Saturday for those of us who are Too
heavy, too busy to train ... too almost anything but want to pin a number
on and race this incredible course.
To make it even easier to come .. The Racing Post will comp every 5th team
member who registers for both days. BikeReg the first four and send the
5th to this email > that one will RACE FREE
The whole weekend of racing only costs $50 till October 1 Check out
theracingpost.us for more details.
We're always in need of more sponsorship, so if you know anyone or an

Stewart's Seafood & Steak House
Corner LA 16 & LA 450, Franklinton, LA
"Cucumber Corner"
Registration begins at 6:45 am
Ride starts at 7:30 am
Ride lengths:
Century 100 mi Half Century 50 mi
Metric Century 63 mi Quarter Century 25 mi
Last year we tried out a new starting location and completely new set of routes for our annual fall century ride. The new location received very favorable reviews from riders so we are returning there this year. Registration and the after-ride party will take place at Stewart's Seafood & Steakhouse which is on the corner of LA 16 & LA 450 near Franklinton in Washington Parish. This location is commonly known as "Cucumber Corner."
All four of the century routes will be on quiet, scenic, rolling to hilly roads of western Washington Parish and northeastern Tangipahoa Parish. Route maps and road markings will point the way, and helpful volunteers at strategically placed rest stops will stand ready with cool water and tasty snacks. Once back at Stewarts Seafood, you will enjoy a hearty post-ride meal with beer and soft drinks.
While the century is designed to be an enjoyable experience, the event is held on public roads open to other vehicles. Riders should expect to encounter motorists and be prepared for road hazards. Participants should operate their bicycles in a safe and lawful manner and obey traffic laws throughout the ride. The CCC requires the use of ANSI or Snell approved helmets for all club rides including the century. Everyone is encouraged to ride with a partner; children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Registration
The registration fee for the Crescent City Century is $35. You may register online at active.com, or at http://www.crescentcitycyclists.org/online_century_reg.html . The century fee includes SAG support, restroom facilities at the start, maps, road surface markings, and lunch with beer and soda following the ride.
All pre-registered riders will receive a free Polar brand insulated water bottle with Crescent City Cyclists logo. Water bottles will not be provided for day of event registrations. To receive a water bottle, your pre-registration must be postmarked by Saturday, September 12, 2009. Members of Crescent City Cyclists who pre-register by September 12 will pay a discounted price of $30. This discount is valid for pre-registration only. All registrants will pay $35 on the day of the century. Non-members may join CCC and save $5 on their century fee by submitting a membership application and dues ($18/yr individual, $25/yr family) along with their century pre-registration.
Please note:
The century will be limited to 500 riders. To be sure you are able to ride, please send in your registration as soon as possible.
This is a "rain or shine" event; not much short of a hurricane bearing down on us will force a postponement. If the unthinkable should happen be sure to call the CCC Hotline (888-901-9581) for rescheduling information.
Please fill out the registration form and mail it in with your registration fee while you are thinking about it. Or you can register on our website: www.crescentcitycyclists.org.
If you have any questions, e-mail century@CrescentCityCyclists.org or call Joe Berthelot at 504-469-7900.

Below is a brief history of the Louisiana State Parks that are hosting this ride:
Centenary State Historic Site (East College and Pine Street in Jackson) - This is the former site of Centenary College. Visitors may tour the old West Wing dormitory or a professor's cottage, and learn about the history of education in Louisiana. A Confederate cemetery is located on the grounds. Originally opened as the College of Louisiana in 1826, the school occupied an old courthouse and other buildings in the town of Jackson. The college steadily grew and two dormitories were built on new property in 1832 and 1837. The West Wing, the latter of these two buildings, remains today.
Audubon State Historic Site (South of St. Francisville on LA 965) - The nearly 200-year-old Oakley House is where John James Audubon drew inspiration and sketched many of the birds found in his famous Birds of America. The visitor may tour the house-turned-museum, formal gardens, an outside kitchen building and barns, walk the trails and enjoy a picnic lunch at the large pavilion nearby. This lush natural setting, with a variety of birds singing throughout the 100-acre forest, still inspires visitors. In these peaceful environs, it is easy to imagine the artist filling his sketch pad with notes and drawings for his famous series of bird illustrations.
Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site (In St. Francisville on La. Hwy. 10) - Built during the 1830s, Rosedown had one of the largest private gardens in the U.S. in the 19th century. Daniel and Martha Turnbull began construction on the main house at Rosedown in 1834, completing it by May the following year. The home was furnished with the finest pieces available, most imported from the North and from Europe. In addition to the gardens and many original structures, visitors can see many furnishings and items that the Turnbulls themselves brought into the main house. Rosedown Plantation is located in the West Feliciana Parish community of St. Francisville along one of the most historic corridors in South Louisiana. The historic presence of the River created deep soil deposits to form uplands that became, in the days of the cotton boom, extremely productive and valuable. In addition to the natural flats, creeks draining to the River created some expanses of rugged, heavily tr!
eed terrain that became profitable as timberland.
Port Hudson State Historic Site (US 61, 30 minutes north of Baton Rouge) - This 909-acre site encompasses part of the Port Hudson Battlefield Civil War Site. Featured are six miles of hiking trails, 1 and 1/2 miles of trenches, a museum and interpretive programs. Fort Desperate, a primary Confederate position, is accessible by a concrete walkway and elevated wooden boardwalks. (The ride will not visit this site, but the members of this site will do a cannon demonstration at 11:30 a.m. at Centenary College)

Guru Bicycles star "Viktor Zyemtsev" Wins Ironman Louisville, KY
http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20090830/SPORTS/908300359/1002/sports/Men+s+Ironman+comes+down+to+one+late+rally
Great news: Viktor Zyemtsev beat out some tough competitors yesterday to win IM Louisville in record time. Once again, the custom Crono makes a difference during and after the ride: he ran an impressive 2:43:49 marathon after putting in a smooth, top 5 bike leg. Proof once again that a Guru bike, first and foremost, is about precision serving performance.
We are happy to have Viktor on our side; the guy is a throw-back. Take a look at his last e-mail to us last week:
Hi Roberto!
I'll start IM Louiseville this weekend. I stiil don't have my race-suit from my sponsor. Can you send me a logo, that I can print off and iron on to my race-suit. I would buy special paper at Wal-Mart, to print the logo on to. Then use this paper to Iron on to my race suit. Do you think this would work?
Cencerely.
Viktor.
Priceless. We’re glad it worked, Viktor. Please join us in congratulating him.
Cheers,
Rob Rossi
p.s. Though you shouldn’t reproduce any of the photos featured on-line – we are working to buy-out an appropriate bike shot – feel free to spread the good news to your customers.

Stan Prutz takes on Lance at Leadville 100
The Leadville Mountain Bike 100 is one of those must do races for the
serious racer. In it's 16th year, this race runs from 9,500 to 12,500 feet
elevation with about 12,000' of climbing, including a 7 mile 3000' climb to
12,500'.
This race brings out the best in mountain biking - this year Lance
Armstrong set a course record (with a flat tire the last three miles).
There were riders from 48 states and 18 countries.
You line up at 5:00AM; racing starts at 6:30AM. The first two hours this
year where rainy and cold - you could feel the sleet on your face. Toward
the top of the main climb, about half way thru the race there was more rain
- a cold and windy peak. Some sections you will definitely be pushing your
bike thru the rocks and steep grades.
Of the 1250 or so entrants that showed at the start, less than 900 finished
within the cutoff time of 12 hours. If you finished between 9 and 12
hours, you earned a silver belt buckle. If you finish in under 9 hours,
you'll earn a larger gold and silver buckle. Less than 10% of the starters
finished within 9 hours. They even give awards for consistency - huge 1000
mile belt buckles and jackets for 1100 milers and beyond, There are
several people who have raced Leadville every year for the last 16 years.
The race is professionally run - a big rally / check-in Friday morning;
pasta dinner that evening, a Saturday of racing and an awards ceremony
Sunday morning that everyone attends. They used ankle timing chips this
year. Each finisher got a large souvenir medallion placed around their
next at the finish line. The next day there were hooded sweatshirts
personalized with the riders name and finishing time. Most appreciated is
the support - there are people along the whole course encouraging everyone
they see - this race about doubles the population of Leadville - the town's
people are truly supportive of each rider.
Definitely ranks with the best available race events in this country.
Riders were limited to 1400 this year, about all the course can handle. A
lottery in January determines who gets entrance. Checkout
www.leadvilletrail100.com
I finished 10:36, about the 40th percentile. Matt Davis finished in an
incredible 8:02 with mechanical issues at that - 22nd overall.
Pic was sent seperately.

Photos: Tour de Louisiana
Here are a bunch of photo's from all 3 stages this weekend. They are from my camera, so of course they are heavy on the 123 field but there are a bunch of pictures from all categories in the Road Race. Also, my camera is the one I had in Katrina, so it's finally starting to act up, especially in the hands of Candy the photographer.

Guru on Discovery / Science Channel TV
http://science.discovery.com/videos/how-its-made-carbon-fiber-bike-frames.html
Hello,
You will find above a video excerpt from a recent episode of the show How It’s Made. Guru was fortunate enough to be featured in their segment on the fabrication of carbon fiber frames. The link below cites
the schedule for the show’s re-airing on the Science Channel (How It’s Made 6, Episode 2). The Canadian broadcast on Discovery Canada won’t be until September ’09 – it always takes longer for good things to find their way up here…
http://science.discovery.com/tv-schedules/series.html?paid=48.14293.126455.16541.1&start=20
There will be other reruns of the episode, but we do not have those dates and times available yet (check the attached website for details moving forward). If you have a chance to see the show, you’ll get a good glimpse into the work that goes into making GURU carbon frames for each of your clients. If nothing else, you’ll get to place some of the faces that make up GURU.

Rob Rossi

Colin Goodier Protection Act Bill
Attached is the bill in its pre-filed form. It's even more than we asked for--a HUGE accomplishment in itself! However, our work is far from done. After a lenghty conversation with Karen Mogridge, ED of Bike Walk MS, I realized we've got to keep the ball rolling. They have tried and failed three times to get a bicycle protection act passed. Let's keep focusing for just a few weeks longer Louisiana. Also, if we pass, it helps Mississippi's chances next year.
The next step is the House Transportation Sub-Committee. The date has not been named yet, but it will be important that voting members from these Representatives' areas be present when they discuss the bill as it's possible our presence will be announced.
Please look at the attached spreadsheet to see if you have a connection to any of the members, especially the Chair, Nita Rusich Hutter from St. Bernard Parish. She will lead the discussion and will have the power to direct the conversation in a positive direction. We NEED her on our side!
If you want to see more info about these members, go here: http://house.louisiana.gov/H_Cmtes/H_Cmte_TR.asp
If you and your family members have not written to your local house and senate seats, there is still plenty of time. Please take 5 minutes to write three e-mails. www.louisiana3feet.com

Alligator Bayou Tours talk about the draining of Alligator Bayou issue
Meet at Alligator Bayou for clip in at 4 p.m. The ride is not a race. Instead it is geared for folks who ride at a leisurely pace. The ride will head down Manchac Bayou Road towards Bayou Paul Rd. One can either continue straight & follow the road as it turns into Bayou Paul Lane or turn left onto Bayou Paul Road & head towards Nicholson (but first turning onto Bayou Paul Lane right before Nicholson).
The distance can be as short as 14 miles or longer if you want to cross Nicholson & head towards RR as long as you're back in time to hear the operators of Alligator Bayou Tours talk about the draining of Alligator Bayou issue. This is not a BRBC ride. I'm leading it as a Sierra Club event.
ncgrush@yahoo.com
Alligator Bayou is a jewel of our area. I am very interested in hearing
what the operators of Alligator Bayou have to say. I have been trying
to keep up with the issue in the media.
Thanks for organizing this event.

Q&A with Mirinda Carfrae: The World Champ Is Setting Her Sights on Kona

The 70.3 and Ironman World Champion Gear Up For a Battle in Kona 2009
Q&A with Mirinda Carfrae: The World Champ Is Setting Her Sights on Kona
Written by Liz Hichens
Carfrae will be competing in Kona in October. Photo by Brad Kaminski.
With Chrissie Wellington dominating the last two years at the Ford Ironman World Championships in Kona, many have raised the question as to who will challenge Wellington in the 2009 race. After sticking strictly to half-Ironman distance races, former Ironman 70.3 world champion Mirinda Carfrae is adding her name to the list of contenders who will challenge for the top spot in Kona.
We sat down with Carfrae to talk about her decision to take on Kona, as well as how she will approach her season leading up to the big event.
Triathlete: How do you feel coming off of 2008?
Carfrae: I was pretty disappointed with the Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater and how that ended up, but last year was a mixed bag and I did have some good results early last season. In the first ten races, I was on the podium nine times and that was great. Having said that, I would trade all of that for a world title. Looking forward, I'm pretty excited about this whole season with the Ironman World Championship in Kona being the big goal. It is a different focus for me than it has been over the last few years and I'm very excited for what's to come.
Triathlete: What will your race schedule be leading up to Kona?
Carfrae: I will be doing a lot of 70.3s again. I'm racing Ironman 70.3 California at Oceanside, St. Anthony's Triathlon, and St. Croix Ironman 70.3. Then I will have a heavy race schedule in June with Revolution Three, Eagleman Ironman 70.3, and Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs Lake. After that, I'm going to be getting ready to do Kona.
Triathlete: Do you enjoy having a heavy racing schedule?
Carfrae: I love racing. I think that was one of my problems last year. I definitely needed to sit down with my coach and say, when are we going to get quality training and rest, and when is the best time to race? I try to get in as many races as possible without hurting my training program and my improvement.
Triathlete: Why did you choose this year to go after Kona?
Carfrae: I always had in the back of my mind that 2009 would be the year that I would do Kona. I'm 28 this year, so I figure it's a good year to give it a shot. Most women peak in their low- to mid-30s, and I definitely think you can stay strong into your late 30s and 40s. I didn't want to do Kona too early in my career, and I enjoyed racing the 70.3 series. I'm ready to take the big leap.
Along with Wellington and Sandra Wallenhorst, Carfrae is part of Cannondale's trio of female triathletes competing in Kona this year.
Triathlete: Will you focus on one area over another leading up to Kona?
Carfrae: I think the bike will be the focus for me. I feel like women's racing in Kona has really taken a step up over the past couple of years. We've got Chrissie, who has really raised the bar, and there are a bunch of women who can run sub-three-hour marathons and are still riding very strong. I think if I can have a strong swim and a really good bike, I just need to be there on the run.
Triathlete: Leading up to Kona you are still focusing on the half-Ironman distance races, will your training throughout the season be any different?
Carfrae: I will be upping my long ride and my long run. With 70.3s you can really get away with training with the mindset that you're training for an Olympic-distance race. The half is so much closer in distance to an Olympic than it is to an Ironman. The last few years I have been putting in longer runs and rides just to see how my body would handle it. I always knew I would do an Ironman.
Carfrae is still considering competing at Clearwater after Kona. Photo by Brad Kaminski.
Triathlete: Will you still be doing Clearwater?
Carfrae: I would like to think so, but everything is geared towards Kona at the moment and I will reassess after the race. I feel like I probably will race Clearwater, but anything can happen in Kona.
Triathlete: How do you feel about Cannondale's recent announcement that Chrissie Wellington will be riding Cannondale for the next three years?
Carfrae: I love Cannondale. I've ridden on their bikes my whole career. Any athlete of her caliber who wants to ride a Cannondale shows the high quality of the product. Any way that we can get Cannondale in the spotlight is a good thing and I'm all for it. I also get along very well with Chrissie. I think she's great.
Wellington saught the advice of Carfrae when making her decision to go with Cannondale. Photo by Brad Kaminski.
