Cycling Performance Study at Pennington

If you are looking for a better way to train this season, want to know your VO2max, Lactate Thresholds, and Power Output surrounding these zones, then we have the study for you!

Please read the following study details below on how to test your cycling abilities this year!

Pennington Biomedical Research Center is conducting a study on the behalf of Gatorade Sports Science to examine the effectiveness of a dietary supplement on cycling performance.

Goals of the study:

One: To determine whether a new dietary ingredient will increase the use of body fat during exercise.

Two: To examine whether those using the supplement will increase 20 km time trial (TT) performance after a period of strenuous exercise.

Who is eligible?

• Men between 18 and 35 years of age

• Capable of attaining a V02 max: 50 ml/kg/min. This would be equivalent to a good Category IV or Category III+ rider.

• Must be willing to commit to a testing protocol that will last -40-days.

What the test entails:

The following tests will be performed before and after four (4) weeks of supplementation:

• A V02max test with the determination of VO2max, lactate thresholds and the corresponding power output associated with each.

• A two (2) hour ride at an established percentage of your lactate threshold. Several blood samples will be taken during this portion of the test; however, we will take no muscle
biopsies.

• A 20 km TT to see how fast you can complete the TT.

Upon completion of the study you will receive:

• $200

• A full report detailing your V02max, lactate threshold, heart rates, and power outputs associated with your test.

• A report detailing your time to complete each time trial along with your average heart rate and average power output during each test.

• Various schwag courtesy of Gatorade

If you are interested in participating in our study please contact me directly.

If you know of someone who might be interested in the trial, please forward this to them.

Thank you,

"Rite of Passage" ride...

The BRBC and CCC invite you to the annual "Rite of Passage" ride, Thursday 31 Dec 2009 at 9AM from Greensburg LA.

This tradition ride is a way to mark the end of the 2009 cycling season, and look forward to 2010. Jim Turner and I have been hosting this ride every New Year's Eve since 2001 (maybe longer, ???) in whatever weather. At the end of the ride we will enjoy turkey gumbo, cabbage, black-eyed peas, and whatever you may choose to bring.

Starting (and ending point) is the parking lot just beyond the the LA-10 east truck stop in Greensburg. Ride departs at 9AM so plan accordingly including clothing for the expected cool temperatures and rain. (between 45 and 55 degrees, and between 20% and 50% chance of rain) Course is the same as last year's (see link) and goes to Gillsburg MS and back for 35 miles and 1200 ft of climbing.

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/21530

Best way to get there for CCC riders is I-55 to the LA-10 exit, then west (left) towards Greensburg.

Others take either I-12 east to the Walker exit (LA-447), then north to Walker and a right turn on US-190. Continue to LA-449 turn left, and follow it to the end at LA-37 (make a jog right then left in Pine Grove). At LA-37 turn right to the end in Greensburg, where you turn right again on LA-10 to the truck stop. (1:15 from BR)

If you live North of Florida in Baton Rouge, you can consider Greenwell Springs road (LA-37) which is the shortest way to Greensburg, but if you do be aware of the enforced 45 speed limit in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Call or reply if you need more information, or have additions or corrections.
