tragic death of Frank J. Bercegeay...

Tommy Martinez spoke about the tragic death of Frank J. Bercegeay at the Parish council meeting but then pivoted to talk about efforts to pave the levee to, "give you a place to ride." Yes, bikes are great for recreation and we want to encourage that. We ALSO need to encourage complete streets throughout the area where we - our families, friends, and neighbors - can use a bike when we need or want to go to the store, school, work, or visit friends. Ascension needs to act before more people are killed. Please go to the link below to Mr. Martinez know you support bikes in ALL of Louisiana. Feel free to cut and paste the above paragraph. http://bit.ly/14hsBVA Why does this matter to you if you don't live in Ascension? As Baton Rouge and surrounding areas continue to grow we become more connected and drivers who drive in Ascension, Livingston, etc. drive in Baton Rouge, West Feliciana, East Feliciana, etc. Bicycle and pedestrian facilities are not only for the city. You can avoid 'problem areas' all you want but they will not avoid you. If you ride River Road you've seen the increase in traffic due to the casino and it's only going to get worse if drivers and city officials do not learn to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians. Only when we can change the car culture of the entire area will we truly have safer roads and complete streets.

brand new Carbon Zone’s will be landing this month

A reminder that our brand new Carbon Zone’s will be landing this month. If you’re like a lot of us- you spend a great portion of your road rides searching for hidden dirt roads or shredding on gravel whenever possible. With input from Barry Wicks, Kona designed this bike to be the ultimate endurance road racing machine that is just as capable on dirt & gravel as it is on tarmac. The Zone is the rocket ship that Barry Wicks piloted to a top 5 finish at The Rouge Roubaix this past weekend in Baton Rouge, LA. Check out the full write-up on the race and the weekend from The Team. http://www.rougeroubaix.com http://cog.konaworld.com/archives/15736 Nate Clark Kona USA

a project starting that may affect your normal biking....

From Nancy Kulheimer: Cyclists...Be careful out there. I know we are always trying to avoid hazards: For those that park at the Split and ride the training loop....or for those that ride between the Casino and the Split...there is now a project starting that may affect your normal biking. There are several trailers in the LA DOTD lot at the Split. I chatted with Matt Milton of Beard Construction about their project for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The plan is the remove the temporary bagged sand from the levee top and raise the levee. Matt indicated that they will have up to 200-300 workers between the Casino and the Split over the next 6 months with lots of trucks, dirt, earth movers, etc.. I envision lots of sand and dirt on the roadway, so biking may be challenging. Parking will be limited, and do not block the entrance to the DOTD lot or you may be towed. The project will gear up to a 7 day a week, 24 hour/D operation. They don't anticipate closing the road like last year's work near LSU. But you may want to avoid this area for the next 6 months.
