West Feliciana Parish Police Jury agenda

Thanks to all who responded to yesterday's call to action on the West Feliciana Parish Police Jury agenda item to discuss permits for groups of three or more bicycle riders on Parish roads. At least 15 cyclists both from Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana took time out of their busy schedules, prepared to comment on this issue. My sincere gratitude to each of one for attending, and professional attitude shown by all. A special thanks to Marsanne Goldsby, who could not be at the meeting, but who prepared a list of talking points to help our effort to respond to this restrictive proposal. Fortunately Juror Mel Percy acknowledged that the restrictive "groups of 3 or more" was erroneous wording as that would limit families from riding together without a permit. The intent of the permits was to inform agencies (Police, Sheriff, Fire, EMS etc) of large group rides, such as charity rides, races, and BRBC century events. Agreement in principle was reached to form a committee to discuss how to best implement such a process so as to be most useful for the Parish and the event organizers. Those wishing to participate in this process, please contact WF Parish Secretary Sherrel Johnson @ 225.784.3652. Juror Percy also offered that cyclist have not always been the best behaved, and cited past incidents at Parish Fire stations, where riders were suspected of relieving themselves either before or after a ride. No parking signs have since been posted at fire stations, and to my knowledge the cycling community has respected the parking ban. Those who spoke to the Jury included Ron Duplessis, Justin Flint, and myself. Others locals spoke, but I did not catch their names. Ron spoke offering that whatever is crafted must not inhibit the blossoming business support brought by cyclists as one of Louisiana's premier cycling destinations. Justin offered a beginning dialog on determining what would constitute a group size requiring a permit suggesting that 50 would be a minimum number and not interfere with the many impromptu rides which could have between 3 and 25 participants. This will be one of the topics of the upcoming committee. No doubt, whatever the outcome, this could be a pattern that other Parishes copy, and it is in the cycling community's interest to have a hand in its development. Bruce

infrastructure saves lives

Here's an article from the European Cyclists' Foundation. Actually, it's an interview with an author of a study published in the "American Journal of Public Health." The opening line on the ECF Website is: If you need more evidence that infrastructure saves lives, then look no further. New research from the American Journal of Public Health shows that dedicated bike lanes can cut injuries by half. ECF had a few questions to ask the brains behind the study, Professor Kay Teschke. http://www.ecf.com/news/want-safer-cycling-think-infrastructure/ Enjoy reading this interview! Mark E. Martin

USA Cycling Local Associations summit meeting

LAMBRA Racers: I have attached the agenda for the USA Cycling Local Associations summit meeting that Michael Humphreys and I will be attending this weekend. There is always a lot of discussion at these meetings and I would appreciate hearing from you about any issues in which you are particularly interested. I am sure there will be much talk about how USAC might work with USADA to become more proactive in the anti-doping arena, how we can improve the racing experience for new riders, etc. We will be scheduling the annual LAMBRA meeting soon, so please also take some time to discuss with your clubs the events that you might wish to get onto the LAMBRA calendar for 2013, changes in the LCCS points competition, etc. We’ll send out a notice as soon as we are ready to begin putting together the LAMBRA planning calendar so we can see where there are conflicts and get them resolved as early as possible. And to top it all off, Tour Magazine named the EVO "Best Bike in the World" after testing more than 2,000 bikes over 10 years. But don't take our word for it - or even Tour Magazine's. The proof is on the podium. LIQUIGAS-CANNONDALE DOMINATES THE TOUR OF CALIFORNIA Liquigas-Cannondale's Peter Sagan won 5 of the race's 8 stages on the SuperSix EVO Team, easily taking the points classification - and held the overall lead for the first half of the race. Sagan was clearly the man to beat at every sprint finish - taking convincing wins in Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Livermore, Clovis and Los Angeles on the Best Bike in The World. In addition, Tim Duggan was named Most Courageous Rider on Stage 6 from Palmdale to Big Bear Lake!

Team LIVESTRONG

On October 21, 2012, thousands of riders like you will hop on their bikes to ride for the 28 million people living with cancer. Our goal is to have 5,000 riders at the start line in downtown Austin, the biggest cycling event the city has ever seen. With the number of lives cancer has touched, it’s not an impossible goal. Recruit your friends, family, neighbors, colleagues and everyone else you know to join. We need all hands on deck. So far Austin has raised over $240,000 and I know you can come together to reach the $2 million goal by October. When recruiting fellow riders (anyone with a working bicycle), be sure to let them know there isn’t a fundraising minimum this year. Whether they raise $50, $500 or just come out and show their support, they’re making a difference in the fight against cancer. We also have great fundraising incentives this year including a commemorative 15th anniversary t-shirt that is only available to Austin Challenge riders. And we are hosting a gala event that you don’t want to miss. The Gala will take the place of the Fundraising Appreciation Dinner, and to earn a ticket you must reach $5,000 in fundraising. Course descriptions for 2012 have been posted. The ride distances are 18, 65 and 100 miles. All riders will head south out of Austin and return to the LIVESTRONG Village where the Post-Event Party and a good time await. Thank you for your participation. We certainly cannot thank you enough for all you do. Please let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy the ride, Matthew Florio Team LIVESTRONG@TeamLIVESTRONG Ride Course Information The Team LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin will start and finish at the Palmer Events Center North Circle Driveway on Riverside Drive, across the way from Auditorium Shores. Participants will depart via wave starts based on ride distance. Cyclists are required to follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic signs and signals. Law enforcement personnel will be used at intersections with moderate to high traffic and/or traffic signals to assist with cycling safety and motor awareness. 18-Mile Course This course features an out-and-back loop that is great for a beginner cyclist or a family or group of riders. After crossing the start line, riders will turn right onto South 1st Street heading for the South Austin neighborhoods and Atkins High School. The school driveway will serve as the turnaround point for riders to head back up South 1st Street to the LIVESTRONG Village in time for a coffee and breakfast tacos. 65-Mile Course The 65-mile course is ideal for intermediate to experienced riders who are looking for a longer, more challenging ride. Riders follow the same course as the 18-mile route, but turn right onto Old San Antonio Road heading west past Buda into gorgeous rolling terrain. Riders will enjoy great views of Texas hill country as the course loops south, eventually winding back up to Austin. 100-Mile Course Riders who want to experience a true Texas Hill Country ride should definitely take on the 100-mile course. This course promises to be both a challenging and scenic fall ride. Riders head south out of Austin, then turn right onto Old San Antonio Road heading west past Buda. The course will then turn south towards Wimberly and east to San Marcos before working back north to Austin and the LIVESTRONG Village. Please note that all courses are subject to change. Information including cue sheets, detailed maps and elevation profiles for each course will be posted as they are finalized.

Spring Ride & 5 K

http://bccbike.org/springride/ Hosted by Bayou Country Cyclists (the Green Team)Bayou Runners This Sunday is the Hopp's Hope ride down near Houma, a benefit for Scott Hoppmeyer who was critically injured while riding his bike down in Bayou country. Scott is a handfull of life and spirit and it would go a long way to his recovery if you were to show up and ride. Scott made it a point to attend almost every Time Trial in the area and was talking about making the leap into road racing when his accident happened. A year before the accident, Scott adopted an abused and discarded puppy that was stuck in and almost drowned in the 17th Street Canal. Since his accident, "Gracie" has had to find other accommodations. If you ever met him, you'd know that Scott is a hell of a guy, a man's man who drives a Corvette and enjoys all the good, simple things that come with a successful life. He's been generous with his time and is always eager to guide new athletes. Now he needs our help. Just show up and ride. Proceeds go to the Southeast Spinal Cord Injury Fund in honor of Scott Hoppmeyer. Visit: http://bccbike.org/springride/ Kenny

Belles on Bikes is this Saturday, April 28th

Belles on Bikes is this Saturday, April 28th. Register now to insure a special item in your goodie bag (limited to first 75 registrants). Online registration closes at midnight Thursday. http://natchezbike.org/bellesonbikes.htm Belles on Bikes is a women's only recreational ride starting from downtown Natchez, MS and includes riding on the Natchez Trace. This is the only event of its kind in the region. Come join women from all over for a great weekend of cycling. Guys, if you are trying to get your significant other interested in cycling but she is hesitant because she is intimidated by events dominated by the men, this is an awesome event for only women guaranteed to break the ice. From the 16 mile route to the historic girls' school to the scenic and more challenging 48 mile Church Hill loop or the 58 mile route that includes the state park, there is something for Belles at every level of cycling expertise, but the shorter routes provide the pleasure of road riding through the countryside that just may be the key to her discovering that love for cycling that you have been trying to explain. Natchez is a short drive from Baton Rouge, the weather forecast looks great, and the scenery will be beautiful. The ride has a few feminine touches like a refreshing lunch after the ride, door prizes, and a super goodie bag at registration. So encourage and support her in this--you might be surprised by the results. Babs http://natchezbike.org/bellesonbikes.htm

The Benefits of bicycling

I know this is preaching to the choir but the article linked below provides some powerful reasons for supporting the creation of more and better bicycling infrastructure. Want to provide your citizens the means to save $3.8 billion? How about $3.5 billion worth of clean air? Maybe save 1,100 lives over the course of a year? It's not that difficult, nor expensive, to do. http://tinyurl.com/dxhhejw If the tiny URL doesn't work, here's the full URL: http://www.fastcoexist.com/1678986/this-bike-could-save-your-life-an-infographic-on-the-massive-benefits-of-bicycling Mark E. VELO LOUISIANE BICYCLE FESTIVAL WEEKEND, March 31st through April 1st

Please join us for the 3rd Annual VELO LOUISIANE BICYCLE FESTIVAL WEEKEND, March 31st through April 1st. Velo Louisiane rolls out Saturday morning, March 31st, with Mayor Holden's Bike Day program and Family Fun Ride. Activities continue at various locations through Saturday evening. Sunday morning events lead into the main festival at noon, at Perkins Road Community Park. This free, family- friendly festival is hosted by Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) and the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC). Activities feature a variety of rides, fun competitions, bicycle-related demonstrations, children's activities and contests, displays, raffles, a bike parade, and more! Past Velo Louisiane festivals in Baton Rouge have attracted thousands of citizens, and helped to publicize important considerations of bicycle safety and motorist awareness while being fun, engaging, and entertaining. Since 2010, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of cyclists on our streets; whether for sport, exercise, or basic transportation. Research indicates the more that people bicycle on our streets and roadways, the safer bicycling becomes. This effect carries over to greater safety for motorists and pedestrians as well. Donate blood drive for Danny regardless of Blood Type

Justin Weber Danny Morris, the surviving victim of this tragic event needs your help. Anyone can donate blood for Danny regardless of Blood Type. To do so, go to Our Lady of the Lake info desk and they will direct you where to go. Let them know you are giving blood for Danny Morris who is a patient there. He needs it desperately. Maybe you are not in the shape to do so, but you might know someone who can. Spread the word.

Another senseless death

Another senseless death I knew Nathan Crowson. Now he is dead. A drunk driver ran him over and killed him while he was riding on Perkins Road. Daniel Morris, who was riding with Nathan, remains in the hospital. But why were Nathan and Daniel riding on Perkins Road at night? They have the legal right and responsibility to be there, to be sure, but why would they be there? Just like everyone else on Perkins Road, and all the other streets of Baton Rouge, they were getting where they wanted to go. Unfortunately, because Baton Rouge has spent the past 60 years creating a city with only one viable means of transportation – the personal automobile – they had no choice but to ride Perkins Road. There are no bicycle paths paralleling Perkins Road. There are no bicycle routes through the neighborhoods because many of the developments are not connected. There is only one way to get to many places in town on a bicycle and that is on the road with motorists. This doesn't have to be the way things are. Cities are built. We could have built bicycle facilities, sidewalks, and a mass transit system with dedicated on-street facilities to be used in conjunction with motor vehicles over the past 60 years but we didn't. We gave our city over to the automobile and it is killing us every day. Not just bicyclists but other motorists and pedestrians die. For the past six years the Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) has been advocating for bicycling and walking in Baton Rouge. Two years ago, in fact, BRASS submitted a bicycle route that will connect the Levee Path with Highland Observatory. This route uses existing, low-traffic and low-speed streets. A few short connectors will have to be built at minimal cost. Why hasn't is been created? The Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) calls upon the Mayor's office, the Metropolitan Council, the Department of Public Works, and BREC: • to work together to adopt a Complete Streets policy for the City-Parish; • to create, fund, and implement a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plan for the city-parish as soon as possible; • to establish a bicycle / pedestrian coordinator position within the governance of the City-Parish with oversight authority to ensure new facilities are created appropriately and in accordance with current standards and best practices, and; • to immediately begin working on implementing a safe bicycle and pedestrian route roughly paralleling Perkins Road and another roughly paralleling Highland Road. Join BRASS is creating a safer Baton Rouge for all roadway users. Go to www.brsafestreets.org to see how. Mark E.Martin BRASS

A bicycle ride in honor of those law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty the year before.

My name is Rich Gallo and I am with Law Enforcement United - a group of police officers who, each spring, bicycle ride in honor of those law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty the year before. This coming year, we are going to start in Baton Rouge, because a officer (retired Customs) in our group was killed while out on a training bike ride. His name was J. Rob Moorhead - and he lived in Denham Springs. Our group consists of approx 12 riders (with some support staff) - and from Baton Rouge we will proceed to Brunswick, GA where the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is located; and then continue bicycling to Washington, DC (getting into DC at the start of National Police Week). If possible, I would like to talk to someone in the Baton Rouge Bicycle Club - to prepare a route from BR / Denham Springs out towards Mississippi. I do have the Adventure Cycling Association maps (Southern Tier, Section 6) but this map details a route that starts from St. Francisville, goes north to Norwood, east to Kentwood before getting into Bogalusa. We were looking for a more direct route to Bogalusa (if possible) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated - in fact we do have "gifts" for our trail angels along the way! Besides this e-mail, I can be reached at (516) 317-9320. Regards for a happy healthy New Year - Rich Gallo Director - Law Enforcement United - FLETC Ride www.leunited.org
