Team LIVESTRONG
On October 21, 2012, thousands of riders like you will hop on their bikes to ride for the 28 million people living with cancer. Our goal is to have 5,000 riders at the start line in downtown Austin, the biggest cycling event the city has ever seen. With the number of lives cancer has touched, it’s not an impossible goal. Recruit your friends, family, neighbors, colleagues and everyone else you know to join. We need all hands on deck.
So far Austin has raised over $240,000 and I know you can come together to reach the $2 million goal by October. When recruiting fellow riders (anyone with a working bicycle), be sure to let them know there isn’t a fundraising minimum this year. Whether they raise $50, $500 or just come out and show their support, they’re making a difference in the fight against cancer.
We also have great fundraising incentives this year including a commemorative 15th anniversary t-shirt that is only available to Austin Challenge riders. And we are hosting a gala event that you don’t want to miss. The Gala will take the place of the Fundraising Appreciation Dinner, and to earn a ticket you must reach $5,000 in fundraising.
Course descriptions for 2012 have been posted. The ride distances are 18, 65 and 100 miles. All riders will head south out of Austin and return to the LIVESTRONG Village where the Post-Event Party and a good time await.
Thank you for your participation. We certainly cannot thank you enough for all you do. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Enjoy the ride,
Matthew Florio Team LIVESTRONG@TeamLIVESTRONG
Ride Course Information
The Team LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin will start and finish at the Palmer Events Center North Circle Driveway on Riverside Drive, across the way from Auditorium Shores. Participants will depart via wave starts based on ride distance.
Cyclists are required to follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic signs and signals. Law enforcement personnel will be used at intersections with moderate to high traffic and/or traffic signals to assist with cycling safety and motor awareness.
18-Mile Course
This course features an out-and-back loop that is great for a beginner cyclist or a family or group of riders. After crossing the start line, riders will turn right onto South 1st Street heading for the South Austin neighborhoods and Atkins High School. The school driveway will serve as the turnaround point for riders to head back up South 1st Street to the LIVESTRONG Village in time for a coffee and breakfast tacos.
65-Mile Course
The 65-mile course is ideal for intermediate to experienced riders who are looking for a longer, more challenging ride. Riders follow the same course as the 18-mile route, but turn right onto Old San Antonio Road heading west past Buda into gorgeous rolling terrain. Riders will enjoy great views of Texas hill country as the course loops south, eventually winding back up to Austin.
100-Mile Course
Riders who want to experience a true Texas Hill Country ride should definitely take on the 100-mile course. This course promises to be both a challenging and scenic fall ride. Riders head south out of Austin, then turn right onto Old San Antonio Road heading west past Buda. The course will then turn south towards Wimberly and east to San Marcos before working back north to Austin and the LIVESTRONG Village.
Please note that all courses are subject to change. Information including cue sheets, detailed maps and elevation profiles for each course will be posted as they are finalized.
