Did Whitney Van of Channel 2 Really Say That?
Dear Whitney,
As a avid cyclist and Dutch woman living in Baton Rouge, I send you this link. www.virgin-vacations.com/site_vv/11-most-bike-friendly-cities.asp
May be you will see how backward Baton Rouge is considering bicycling and may be you could make a program about ; ' Cycling and how a group of smart Baton Rougians, the rest of America and the world sees it'.
As a kid growing up in the Netherlands we had to do a (cycling) driving test in order to ride your bicycle and the children still have to do this. It is a written test and driving test like you have to do in order to drive a car (May be an idea for the USA).Car drivers also get educated about bicycles and how to use the road together. There are rules for both and they both have rights.
I hope you can do something with this information,
Don't understimate your power as an media person, use it the right way.

SQUEEKY BIKE WHEELS REALLY DO GET MORE GREASE!!!! :-)
This is the story that WBRZ did on bike paths (or the lack of) in Baton
Rouge. I did not see the segment, did Ms. Van make her comment after this
segment? If so this is an editorial comment and we can demand equal time to
respond to her comments. I would suggest for the President of Baton Rouge
Bike Club to contact WBRZ and request for for equal time to responded to Ms.
Van comments.
Baton Rouge needs to be educate on cycling.
With the price of gas local bike shops are selling a record number of bikes
but I do not see an increased of bikes on the roads. Are people buying
bikes to ride to work but are to afraid to because of local traffic?

Please send your E-Mails not only to Whitney but also to the Management of WBRZ also.

Well, I am furious. Whitney Van on ch. 2 just said on the early 5am
news, "why are the cyclist on river road when they have a perfectly
good bike path on top of the levee?" She complained that the cyclist
were taking up the road, while traffic was "50 cars deep." It is
attitudes such as this that kill cyclist. I am writing a letter to
channel 2 and the Advocate, hopefully later today when I am not so
mad. I need to know exactly how far does the levee bike path go. I
thought it was only 3 miles. Does anyone know for sure how far it is?
Thanks,
Beth

On the way home Tre' Haydal called me ask me if I knew of this guy who drove this vehicle, road this kind of bike, color, etc. I could not remember the customer or fellow rider. As soon as I got home I checked the bicycle forums and BR TRI's Susan Haydan and Taylor Alexander posted the accident. Here is what they said:
I'm sorry to report that a rider was killed on River Road today while riding his bike. He was a 3rd year general surgery resident, Colin Didier (spelling?).
Bobby Upp called me to say he was pronounced dead at the hospital. His fellow residents and friends are very sad.
I will post more when details on his funeral/services are announced or I find out more about the accident.

Tre Haydel met Chris & me as we were about to ride upon the scene this evening. I went on. Chris wouldn't. It was the most chilling site I've ever seen--a red TT bike mangled beyond recognition. I can't imagine what it did to Colin.
Tre spoke with the Police and they did tell him that the driver was foolin' around with his radio and accidentally hit the cyclist. It happened right by the volunteer fire station on the back side of the split where we stop to get water sometimes.
Pray, pray, pray for that family tonight and for a long time to come.

Kenny (Dunaway),
Thanks again for a great event (Louisiana Tri in New Roads, LA). I think that makes 9 times in the past 10 years I've done your race (don't look back at my times! I've long since accepted that they won't be any good). You really make the race special, and I always appreciate the FCA affilaitation and the pre-race prayer.
Hopefully, you can pass on some special thank yous:
Thanks to Brian Kinchen for the pre-race prayer.
Thanks to the guy (Scott Mackey) from Pedal Play, who fixed my broken shifter cable before the race in less time than it took me to break it! Tell him he saved my race, and really my entire season, since this is usually the only race I do.
Thanks again to you and the volunteers.

For the past few months the staff at Bicycling magazine has spent countless hours pedaling all makes of bicycles in an effort to bring you the "Editors Choice" One of the toughest categories to pick a winner in is the "Best Enthusiast" road bike category since there are so many offerings and this is the sweet spot for a do it all machine.
Standing on top of the podium for 2008 was the Six13 5 with praise for it's beautiful combination of carbon and aluminum, snappy response and steering that's the most intuitive of the bunch and yet never nervous. In the end the Six13 5 was summed up stating "It's hard to go wrong with a bike like this"

Until yesterday, there was no official route, because we had to change it 3 times based on high water and downed trees. We made up the route as we painted arrows. I am calling it "Plan C"
When the maps are done, you will be the first to receive a copy. The routes take all the MOST scenic, the smoothest, and the lowest traffic roads. Every route has at least one SAG, and the distances are all AT LEAST as much as advertised.
Q=29 miles
H=51 miles
M=65 miles
C=101 miles
The H, M, & C all visit Lake Rosemound for the first SAG at mile 25
and travel the via the Solitude, Greenwood, Highland and Sligo roads. These routes depart the park north on US-61 to a left turn on LA-66.
M & C Routes take Harris Cornor, LA-967, and LA-421 to Near Jackson, Then LA-10, to LA-965, and SAG at Mary Brown Nature Center. From there, LA-966, Audubon Lane, LA-965 to US-61, and back to the WFSP.
The C route includes an out and back from LA-421 to the end of Peterson road at the closed bridge. (Where a SAG is located). It also includes a side trip through Jackson, and a ride on the Wilson Loop, using Dawson Road, LA-68, a SAG at Wilson, and return to Jackson on LA-952.
The H route leaves the M and C routes at Laurel Hill, and follows US-61 to LA-421, to experience new asphalt to Jones-Vaughn creek, then Sage Hill to Bains, Joe Daniel, and joins the M and C for the ride back to WFSP on LA-965
The Q route starts with the H, M, & C, but turns onto Bains at the schools, then Sage Hill, Jones-Vaughn Creek the easy way to LA-10. It then joins the M & C for the route to the Mary Brown SAG, but cuts off the LA-966/Audubon loop, and heads back to WFSP.
If you can't wait for the offical maps, get your favorite mapping program or GPS out and start plotting.

The Story
Few companies have pushed the metallurgical potential of aluminum as much as Cannondale- and then the carbon fiber market went ballistic. Luckily, the Bedford, PA company has a history of engineering prowess they utilized for designing and building race-winning bikes

Please join us in wishing Jairo a very special 70th birthday! To commemorate this, you can be a part in one way or both ways.
First, we would like to have 70 riders start this ride. You may think this is impossible, but 36 showed up last weekend and as you know, nothing is impossible!
Secondly, there will be a 70-mile option that day for those would also like to do the distance
From Jairo: I have just been contacted by WAFB - CHANNEL 9. They are planning to send a crew to record the event. It is a great opportunity to promote our sport showing good assistance.
Goal: To complete 70 miles with the maximum number of cyclists. It is not a race against time. It is a fun ride for distance.
Start and Finish: Albertson's - Starbucks - corner of Burbank/Bluebonnet
Route: From start, to Nicholson Dr.- Gardere Ln. - River Rd.- Bayou Paul - Manchac Ln - Bayou Paul - River Road - Gummer's Lane - River Road - Gardere Ln. Return on River Rd. to the split and ride a loop on the right, Back to the Start. Total 70 miles.
Pace: 'Moderado'. 18-20 MH. Under no circumstances over 21/22.MH. Motorcycles will regulate speed.
It is time to welcome the 2008 season and get ready for Rouge-Roubaix VIII Road Race which is only 8 weeks away.
' If I can do it at 70, anybody under can do it!'
Have a safe and prosperous 2008 cycling year and remember, No Such Thing As Impossible.
Looking forward to seeing you Jan. 12th. Please pass this invitation to all your cyclist friends.
See you on the road.
