Spring Ride & 5 K
http://bccbike.org/springride/
Hosted by Bayou Country Cyclists (the Green Team)Bayou Runners
This Sunday is the Hopp's Hope ride down near Houma, a benefit for Scott Hoppmeyer who was critically injured while riding his bike down in Bayou country. Scott is a handfull of life and spirit and it would go a long way to his recovery if you were to show up and ride. Scott made it a point to attend almost every Time Trial in the area and was talking about making the leap into road racing when his accident happened. A year before the accident, Scott adopted an abused and discarded puppy that was stuck in and almost drowned in the 17th Street Canal. Since his accident, "Gracie" has had to find other accommodations. If you ever met him, you'd know that Scott is a hell of a guy, a man's man who drives a Corvette and enjoys all the good, simple things that come with a successful life. He's been generous with his time and is always eager to guide new athletes. Now he needs our help. Just show up and ride. Proceeds go to the Southeast Spinal Cord Injury Fund in honor of Scott Hoppmeyer.

Belles on Bikes is this Saturday, April 28th
Belles on Bikes is this Saturday, April 28th. Register now to insure a special item in your goodie bag (limited to first 75 registrants). Online registration closes at midnight Thursday. http://natchezbike.org/bellesonbikes.htm
Belles on Bikes is a women's only recreational ride starting from downtown Natchez, MS and includes riding on the Natchez Trace. This is the only event of its kind in the region. Come join women from all over for a great weekend of cycling.
Guys, if you are trying to get your significant other interested in cycling but she is hesitant because she is intimidated by events dominated by the men, this is an awesome event for only women guaranteed to break the ice. From the 16 mile route to the historic girls' school to the scenic and more challenging 48 mile Church Hill loop or the 58 mile route that includes the state park, there is something for Belles at every level of cycling expertise, but the shorter routes provide the pleasure of road riding through the countryside that just may be the key to her discovering that love for cycling that you have been trying to explain.
Natchez is a short drive from Baton Rouge, the weather forecast looks great, and the scenery will be beautiful. The ride has a few feminine touches like a refreshing lunch after the ride, door prizes, and a super goodie bag at registration. So encourage and support her in this--you might be surprised by the results.

The Benefits of bicycling
I know this is preaching to the choir but the article linked below provides some powerful reasons for supporting the creation of more and better bicycling infrastructure.
Want to provide your citizens the means to save $3.8 billion?
How about $3.5 billion worth of clean air?
Maybe save 1,100 lives over the course of a year?
It's not that difficult, nor expensive, to do.

VELO LOUISIANE BICYCLE FESTIVAL WEEKEND, March 31st through April 1st
Please join us for the 3rd Annual
VELO LOUISIANE BICYCLE FESTIVAL WEEKEND, March 31st through April 1st. Velo Louisiane rolls out Saturday morning, March 31st, with Mayor Holden's Bike Day program and Family Fun Ride. Activities continue at various locations through Saturday evening. Sunday morning events lead into the main festival at noon, at Perkins Road Community Park. This free, family- friendly festival is hosted by Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) and the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC). Activities feature a variety of rides, fun competitions, bicycle-related demonstrations, children's activities and contests, displays, raffles, a bike parade, and more!
Past Velo Louisiane festivals in Baton Rouge have attracted thousands of citizens, and helped to publicize important considerations of bicycle safety and motorist awareness while being fun, engaging, and entertaining. Since 2010, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of cyclists on our streets; whether for sport, exercise, or basic transportation. Research indicates the more that people bicycle on our streets and roadways, the safer bicycling becomes. This effect carries over to greater safety for motorists and pedestrians as well. Details and updates may be found at www.brsafestreets[dot]org

Donate blood drive for Danny regardless of Blood Type
Justin Weber Danny Morris, the surviving victim of this tragic event needs your help. Anyone can donate blood for Danny regardless of Blood Type. To do so, go to Our Lady of the Lake info desk and they will direct you where to go. Let them know you are giving blood for Danny Morris who is a patient there. He needs it desperately. Maybe you are not in the shape to do so, but you might know someone who can. Spread the word.
Another senseless death
Another senseless death
I knew Nathan Crowson. Now he is dead. A drunk driver ran him over and killed him while he was riding on Perkins Road. Daniel Morris, who was riding with Nathan, remains in the hospital.
But why were Nathan and Daniel riding on Perkins Road at night? They have the legal right and responsibility to be there, to be sure, but why would they be there?
Just like everyone else on Perkins Road, and all the other streets of Baton Rouge, they were getting where they wanted to go. Unfortunately, because Baton Rouge has spent the past 60 years creating a city with only one viable means of transportation – the personal automobile – they had no choice but to ride Perkins Road.
There are no bicycle paths paralleling Perkins Road. There are no bicycle routes through the neighborhoods because many of the developments are not connected. There is only one way to get to many places in town on a bicycle and that is on the road with motorists.
This doesn't have to be the way things are. Cities are built. We could have built bicycle facilities, sidewalks, and a mass transit system with dedicated on-street facilities to be used in conjunction with motor vehicles over the past 60 years but we didn't. We gave our city over to the automobile and it is killing us every day. Not just bicyclists but other motorists and pedestrians die.
For the past six years the Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) has been advocating for bicycling and walking in Baton Rouge. Two years ago, in fact, BRASS submitted a bicycle route that will connect the Levee Path with Highland Observatory. This route uses existing, low-traffic and low-speed streets. A few short connectors will have to be built at minimal cost. Why hasn't is been created?
The Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) calls upon the Mayor's office, the Metropolitan Council, the Department of Public Works, and BREC:
• to work together to adopt a Complete Streets policy for the City-Parish;
• to create, fund, and implement a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plan for the city-parish as soon as possible;
• to establish a bicycle / pedestrian coordinator position within the governance of the City-Parish with oversight authority to ensure new facilities are created appropriately and in accordance with current standards and best practices, and;
• to immediately begin working on implementing a safe bicycle and pedestrian route roughly paralleling Perkins Road and another roughly paralleling Highland Road.
Join BRASS is creating a safer Baton Rouge for all roadway users. Go to www.brsafestreets.org to see how.

A bicycle ride in honor of those law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty the year before.
My name is Rich Gallo and I am with Law Enforcement United - a group of police officers who, each spring, bicycle ride in honor of those law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty the year before.
This coming year, we are going to start in Baton Rouge, because a officer (retired Customs) in our group was killed while out on a training bike ride. His name was J. Rob Moorhead - and he lived in Denham Springs.
Our group consists of approx 12 riders (with some support staff) - and from Baton Rouge we will proceed to Brunswick, GA where the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is located; and then continue bicycling to Washington, DC (getting into DC at the start of National Police Week).
If possible, I would like to talk to someone in the Baton Rouge Bicycle Club - to prepare a route from BR / Denham Springs out towards Mississippi. I do have the Adventure Cycling Association maps (Southern Tier, Section 6) but this map details a route that starts from St. Francisville, goes north to Norwood, east to Kentwood before getting into Bogalusa. We were looking for a more direct route to Bogalusa (if possible)
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated - in fact we do have "gifts" for our trail angels along the way!
Besides this e-mail, I can be reached at (516) 317-9320.
Regards for a happy healthy New Year - Rich Gallo

Acorns of Hope is a 4-day bicycle ride
Hey Everybody!
Check out this very cool bicycle ride/community service event going on right here in south LA next month. Please join for the fun and good vibes.
The Acorns of Hope (AOH):
Acorns of Hope is a 4-day bicycle ride from Church Point to New Orleans, by way of Lake Charles, Raceland and Houma. The primary goal of AOH is to reforest the natural cheniers of Southern Louisiana. Many of these belts of live oak trees were destroyed during Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Their disappearance has led to a massive increase in the rate of coastal erosion, which now exceeds the loss of a football field every forty minutes.
Bob Thibodeaux, a local arborist (tree care professional) and tree farmer, set out four years ago to tackle this threat. He aimed to plant 10,000 quality live oak trees along the coastal plain within five years. In support of that effort, he created an annual bike ride. For one week each November, cyclists and arborists alike are invited to ride country roads, plant trees, and experience the hospitality and charm of Southern Louisiana through its food, its people, and its history.
In concert with this ride, Bob also holds various community events throughout the year, with the help of his team at Bob’s Tree Preservation. These including tree plantings, anti-litter and pollution efforts, and education initiatives.
Participation in the AOH bike ride is open to all. 2011 will mark the fourth annual AOH; come join riders from east, north, south and west (as far away as Canada) and really “dig” south Louisiana! We promise that you will see and enjoy your state as never before!
Travel Details:
Participants should arrange to be in Church Point in the morning/early afternoon of Tuesday, November 15th. If you are flying into Lafayette, shuttles will be arranged to pickup participants from the airport.
Be ready for a big bowl of squirrel gumbo and a hearty welcoming that evening!
The AOH will end around noon on Saturday, November 19th. Therefore, participants should arrange transportation from NOLA.
Event Details:
1) There will be plenty of opportunities to plant trees.
2) There will be numerous organized events during the AOH, mostly tree plantings at local schools. While participants are always welcome to join in, they are not required to do so and are entirely free to choose which events they wish to attend.
3) There will be several options for riding bicycles each day. Some participants will ride more, some less. There will be at least one 100km day in the schedule.
4) There will be support for the ride.
5) Local organizations and individuals will donate many delicious meals. However, participants will likely be responsible for some of their own food.
6) AOH organizers are working to secure free accommodations for at least part of the week. Otherwise, participants will be responsible for their own lodging. Either way, information regarding hotels will be made available soon, and updates will be posted on both the event page and the group page.*
*Information current as of October 19th, 2011.
PLEASE RSVP ASAP at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=296326267062956 so that AOH organizers know how many hotel rooms they will need to block out for the event.

Friday, October 7; 7:00-9:00PM.
This will be an opportunity for those that have not competed on the track to get their upgrade to category 4. We will focus on track rules and riding in groups at race pace, specific to the events being held during the Track Championships. Groups will start small and increase in numbers as riders progress.
For those that have been on the track before, this will be a rare opportunity to get some time in with a large pack.
For those planning to participate in the Track Championships on 10.29.11:
if your annual racing license does not indicate cat4 for your track classification, you will be limited to individual timed events (this applies to masters, jr, and women). Upgrades are quick and easy, but the safety clinic is required.
annual licenses are required.
Individual and club poin! ts will be awarded within the LAMBRA Track Cup, as well as cash money!
I'll be running the clinic, Randy Legeai wil be Chief Ref, for the championships, Ben Schuler will be assisting and announcing, LSU Cycling is the promoting club.

New Orleans' designation as a League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly City!
Mayor Landrieu announced today New Orleans' designation as a League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly City. New Orleans received Bronze status after 4 years as an Honorable Mention.
Jamie Wine, Executive Director of Bike Easy - the New Orleans bicycle advocacy organization, thanked local volunteers, supporters and donors for their hard work and commitment to getting New Orleans recognized. "Without them," said Wine, "we could never had made it this far."
Wine continued by encouraging Bike Easy supporters to continue to hold "elected officials, administrators and each other" accountable to reach the next level in the League of American Bicyclists' multifaceted Bicycle Friendly America program.
BRASS salutes Bike Easy and the efforts they have made to successfully join Baton Rouge as a LAB Bicycle Friendly Community! Congratulations!

Lakefront 4-person Team Time Trial.. COUNTDOWN!!!
You now have only 10 days to get your team together! The first ever Lakefront 4-man Team Time Trial is coming up and time is running short. Everything you're used to will be the same, except it will all be completely different. We'll be using the long course (10.6 miles) and starting at the same time and place (Kona Cafe). We may start a little early depending on the readiness of me and the teams. People ask me every week "oh, I thought we start at 6?". No, I say in every e-mail I ever send, get there at 6, first rider/team off at 6:30. This Lakefront TTT will probably be used by many teams as a "dress rehearsal" for the LAMBRA TTT Championships the following weekend. If you are a Tri-athlete or a cyclist, you should consider doing both of these events, it'll really test your limits and make you a faster rider on your own. Follow cars might be allowed as well (for safety and video). We'll have mixed teams, Women's teams and Men's teams categories as well as any man/duck or other husbandry combinations that might show up.
Also, I'll need a few volunteers for numbering teams, driving follow vehicles, start line help and especially finish line "pickers". Bring binoculars if you have them.
Here's an interesting view of a team training for such an event. Notice the yellow car that hits them with a water bottle at 3:15. Wiggins flipped his wig. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUEyBjV2eeA
Wednesday, August 17th 6:00pm (First team off at 6:30)
Rider meeting at the Kona Cafe time clock at 6:10.
Course is the entire length of Lakeshore Drive (10.6 miles).
Starting intervals between teams will be 1 minute. This is subject to change as well, depending on the number of teams.
Times will be recorded on the 3rd rider across the line. This is subject to change to 2nd person, we're still mulling it over since the course is kind of short. But this is a 4-man TTT and just dropping 2 people in the first 2 miles defeats the purpose of team work. However, we don't want to slow anyone down. We want your fastest times!
Please read:
**As always, this is an unsanctioned, unfunded, uninsured, non-event on open roads with free flowing traffic. You are subject to all traffic laws and the rules or the road. You are riding at your own risk with 3 other people who are doing the same. Look at any video of the Tour de France TTT's and you'll see how difficult these events can be. Please be careful and finish safely and on two wheels.
Please don't stand in the road at the finish line. We missed a rider last time because of the crowd that overflowed onto the finish line.

Trail maintenance planned for this weekend
Robin Gibb Diamond
Nomambo has trail maintenance planned for this weekend. Looks like they meeting in the Spillway parking lot for 7:00am on both Saturday and Sunday. Ray (our trail maint chairman) plans to go help on one of the days and would like to get a group together to help out our fellow riders. I am planning to attend and right now we both are flexible as to which day we go. Post up if want to join and we can carpool/caravan.
