I spoke to Will Morris, the Assistant District Attorney today regarding the progress of the Hahn case. Mr. Hahn pled guilty as charged to felony hit and run. The sentencing has been set for August 9, 2011 at 9:00 in Judge Donald R. Johnson's court. You may write to the Judge at the following address:

The event includes cycling routes of 5, 20, 40, and 60 miles, a 5K trail run, and a 1-mile fun run. There is also an optional time trial on West Feliciana's famous
"Red Bug Hill."

Pre registration on www.active.com/running/saint-francisville-la/red-bug-hill-challenge-2011 ends at midnight, Thursday, May 12, 2011. Registriation is available on the day of the event, but it will be an extra $10.00 for cycing and $5.00 for running.

There is NO EXTRA CHARGE to participate in the Red Bug Hill Challenge.

I'm going to quote for you what an experienced cyclist commented about Red Bug Hill:

Red Bug is at least .311mi. start to finish line-- or about 560yds ( I think IF I did the math correct??) with shorts sections of 3-6-8% (just my judging here) the first 200-260 ft. are some "what" flat & the last 200-260ft. /past/over the top are flat-- finish line is NOT at the summit (close but another 200ft or so I think.

An average senior citizen recreation rider from a "standing start"--- will take about 1min 12sec to 1min 15sec.(some better) depending on how high there fitness level is at the time.

For an event like this (RED BUG) 560yards & a "standing start "will favor those with high neuromuscular force/power one of the very FEW times that raw strength could have a impact on race results & those with a very high anaerobic capacity & then being able to transition (little drop off in power ) smoothly to Vo-2 max until the finish.

We would like to invite you to the Red Bug Hill Challenge for Spina bifida on May 14, 2011. This event is held in memory of our son Jordy.

The events include bike rides of 55, 40, and 22 miles; a 5K trail run, and a 1-mile fun fun. In addition, everyone has the option of entering the "Red Bug Hill Challenge," a timed event from the bottom to the top of Red Bug Hill.

Like last year, we will have good food, music, and a raffle with many nice items, including a bicycle. In 2010 we raised over $15,000.00 for children in Louisiana with Spina Bifida.

1. Criterium Championships: As you should be award, the LAMBRA Criterium championships will be held this Sunday in Lake Charles (http://www.lambra.org/calendar/2011/Contraband%20_Criterium_4.pdf). I hope to see a good turnout. The Rhino Racing team, along with Midsouth Masters, has been working hard on the new venue.
2. Joint LCCS-Texas Cup events: You may have noticed the TxBRA logo alongside the LCCS logo on the LAMBRA race calendar for the Vuelta de Acadiana July 2-3. Thanks to the efforts of Glenn Richard, this race will be scored for both LCCS points and Regional Texas Cup points this year. We’re expecting that to draw a number of teams from east Texas, so it should be fun. The reciprocal event on the Texas side of the border will most likely be the June 19 Sugar Land Criterium near Houston, which will be scored for LCCS points in addition to Texas Cup points. We will see how these jointly scored races go this year and whether we want to incorporate some guidelines and limitations (i.e. travel dist! ance) about them into the LCCS rules. If we envision more such races in neighboring states that will count toward LCCS points, it might be time to start talking about limiting the number of LCCS races that count toward a rider’s ranking for next year (i.e. top six).
3. LCCS Update: I’m hoping to get the LAMBRA LCCS points from the Mississippi Gran Prix finished up by tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. All those mixed categories make it a little more tedious than usual. As was done last year for that event, the Cat. 3/4 race will be scored based only on overall GC placing, so if the first Cat. 4 rider came in 5th, he will get 5th place points in the Cat. 4 ranking. Since the Cat. 4/5 race was an omnium, each race will be re-scored for Cat. 4 and C! at. 5, so for example the first Cat. 5 finisher in each race will get the regular road race or time trial 1st place points in the Cat. 5 ranking (Cat. 5 points do not count toward team rankings).
4. Collegiate News: I’d like to acknowledge our collegiate teams that recently finished up their South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference road seasons with lots of strong finishes against some well-established collegiate teams from Texas and Oklahoma. Congratulations to Tulane on taking home the Division II conference omnium team championship. One rider each from the LSU and Tulane teams qualified for Collegiate road nationals May 6-8 in Madison, WI. The collegiate track season will be starting up this summer and the LSU team is already planning on hosting a race at the Baton Rouge Velodrome.

The 2011 Mississippi Senior Olympics bicycle races

Fifty and Older,

The 2011 Mississippi Senior Olympics bicycle races will be held in Clinton, Ms. near Jackson, on May 12th, which is a Thursday. Last year they had only one 50-54 year old rider and not very many in other age groups, with 6 or 7 riders from Louisiana.

There will be a 1 mile TT, 5K TT, 10K TT, 20K RR and 40K RR, all on Thursday May 12th. You can race one or all for a $25.00 fee. Go to their website and check it out, we have to mail in the registration ASAP. You can also scan in your registration information and email it so you will make the cutoff date of May 6th, then send in a copy with your check.

A rememberance of Rob Moorhead

“Anybody ever ride the velodrome?” Rob asked several months ago when he first walked into the bike shop where I work.

He was on his way to work just before our closing time and was kicking around an idea for a new bike. Rob looked just like many weekend riders, fairly unremarkable middle aged guy. As the months went by, he came in occasionally and looked over catalogs for Italian steel bikes and discussed the hostile riding environment in Livingston parish where he lived.

Over the course of several visits, I came to recognize Rob as a seasoned rider who was intelligent as well as risk averse. He knew his rights and at the same time knew how to make sure he was as safe as possible on the road. I learned he was a Veteran and a bagpiper with a local pipe and drum corps. I also learned that he flies medical helicopters often on the night shift, which gave him an excuse to drop-in to the shop in the evenings on his way to work.

Last week, he dropped his bike off for service, a custom titanium road bike with a well-worn leather saddle. This confirmed my suspicions that he was no Johnny-come-lately to cycling. He was training for a 1600 mile charity ride and wanted to make sure his ride was in good shape. Though Rob continued to train on a back-up bike, he called or came by every day to check and see if it was ready. We had been really backed up and every day I had to tell him, “no, not yet. I’ll let you know.” When he came by to check Monday, he brought in pamphlets and cards advertising his charity ride.

As a cyclist and piper, Rob was chosen to ride with a group on the Brotherhood Ride to honor the 411 fallen heroes who died in the line of duty at Ground Zero on 9/11. In addition to riding 60-120 miles a day from Naples, Florida to Ground Zero in New York, the group stops at memorials honoring fallen firefighters and law enforcement, and Rob would play the bagpipes in memoriam. All this was being done to raise money for nonprofits who continue to help the families these heroes left behind.

When I heard about another cyclist death, this time on LA-16 in St. Helena I was saddened as usual; every cyclist and pedestrian fatality is a tragedy, especially since so many could be easily avoided by common courtesy. It was only when I got to the shop on Thursday that I learned it was Rob. I read his name in the paper but I didn’t know the full name of every customer who hangs out at the shop. A coworker at the shop had called his house to let him know we finished tuning up his bike and spoke with Rob’s wife.

In disbelief, I went over to where his Serrota was stowed and read the name on the repair ticket.

Rob was a pretty average guy on the outside, looked like any other rider at a century ride. I had helped him most often at the shop so I wasn’t surprised when I showed the other guys his picture on the pamphlets he left the day before he died, and they said he didn’t look familiar. That was one of the things about Rob; he was pretty unassuming. He didn’t seek recognition for his charity work and only grudgingly discussed his role in the ride when guys at the shop asked him. He was more interested in talking about how he wanted to organize a ride across the state of Louisiana to honor LA’s fallen heroes.

Rob Moorhead was a retired Marine, a retired Federal Law Enforcement Officer, a piper, a AirMed3 pilot, and a husband. Riding his bike on a highway didn’t negate all of that to make him a Cyclist. Every year more bikes are sold in this country than cars, and nearly every ‘Cyclist’ I know owns and uses a car. Why we as a society feel the need to use labels to differentiate ‘Drivers’ from ‘Cyclists’ and treat each other different based on these arbitrary transient brandings to justify poor behavior, I don’t know.

What I do know is a pretty extraordinary member of society was tragically lost before I got a chance to get to know him better. He served his country, served and protected us, and transported people with medical emergencies, and he paid the ultimate price for simply riding his bike.

I hope everyone will consider helping me honor him and thousands like him who have died or been injured at the hands of careless people who often focused too much on texting or making up time and not enough on the road. The 2011 Baton Rouge Ride of Silence will be May 18th beginning from the parking lot across from the Vet School. Before we ride we will honor Rob and others who have been killed or injured with a song by the Caledonian pipe and drum corps at 6:30 and other events as yet to be determined. The ride rolls at 7 PM and will be a silent funeral procession no faster than a rider on a cruiser bike can ride comfortably. We had 120 mountain bikers for round 1 of the 2011 South Central Regional Championship Series (SCRCS) in Hattiesburg, MS last Sunday. This was a record turnout for any mountain bike race ever held in MS.

2nd Annual Velo Louisiane Bicycle Festival

Please join us for the 2nd Annual Velo Louisiane Bicycle Festival Weekend. Your participation, and family and friends would be most welcome. The main event in Baton Rouge is Sunday, April 10th, noon to 6 pm, at Perkins Road Community Park. This free, family- friendly festival is hosted by Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) and the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC). Sunday activities feature a variety of fun competitions, bicycle-related demonstrations, children's activities and contests, displays, raffles, a bike parade, and more!
Velo Louisiane Weekend rolls out April 9th, Saturday morning, with Mayor Holden's Annual Family Fun Ride. Scheduled activities continue at various locations through Saturday evening; and Sunday morning events lead into the main festival at 12:00, noon.

Last year's festival in Baton Rouge was attended by nearly 1,000 citizens, and helped to publicize important considerations of bicycle safety and motorist awareness while being fun, engaging, and entertaining. Since 2010, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of cyclists on our streets; whether for sport, exercise, or basic transportation. Research indicates the more that people bicycle on our streets and roadways, the safer bicycling becomes. This effect carries over to greater safety for motorists and pedestrians as well.

Mayor-President Holden will make a presentation of his proclamation

This Wednesday, March 23, 4 PM, Mayor-President Holden will make a presentation of his proclamation of April as Bicycle Month in East Baton Rouge Parish. Mayor-President Holden's announcement will take place in the Metropolitan Council chambers in the City Government Building, 3rd Floor, east side, 222 St Louis Street, downtown.

We would like to have as many bicyclists present as is possible so come on down and pack the Chamber! The Mayor's presentation will immediately precede the Metropolitan Council meeting and should only take a few minutes.

Be aware that on-going construction of the new Town Square has closed St Louis Street at North Boulevard. The parking garage on St Louis remains accessible from St Louis. Street parking is possible but by no means guaranteed. Be sure to allow enough time to park and get to the Council Chambers by a little before 4 PM,

Just a friendly reminder that the LSU Cycling Team is still in need of volunteers for this weekend's LSU Invitational collegiate race. Below is an outline of positions, places, and times we will need people. The team time trial and criterium races are Saturday in and around Baton Rouge. The road race is Sunday in St. Francisville. The LSU Cycling Team volunteered their time and effort last fall at the Senior Olympics and this past Sunday at Rouge Roubaix.

Every year in May the Red Cross holds a cycling event to raise money called Tour Du Rouge. It is a six-day cycling race from Houston to New Orleans. Right now, we are trying to get participants for the last day of the race, from Galveston to New Orleans. I know that you have a lot of contacts who are runners, but I was wondering if you knew of any cyclists who would be interested in participating. I figured it may be a long shot, but it was worth a try. We are trying to get as many participants as possible for that last day! Re: Parking in Bluff Meadows Drive, Bluff Meadows Subdivision.

One of the most precious assets we have in USA as citizens is that we have rights and they are respected. We should not allowed a couple guys, possible full of envy and ego, prohibit us the use a public street. That is not correct and we should protest.

If we give up simple and basics rights we end up like in other countries, where the chaos is the law. If we permit this type of abuses the next step we will see a guy coming out with a gun in his hand requesting us to get out, give up our rights or accept the consequences. We will have not other choice. That is no right, IT IS A MATHER OF PRINCIPLES AND WE NEED TO ACT.

I want you to know I did check all the records on this property. Bluff Meadows drive is a public street maintained by the city parish. The POA hast to reform the by laws and do the legal process to make a private subdivision. To begin with they have to maintain the streets and make it gated.

On the public street off of Alligator Bayou Rd. by hwy 928, some neighbors had decided to set several NO PARKING SIGNS, prohibiting the regular use of a public street. In addition these signs were installed in the city property. ( right of the way)

Wear brightly colored clothing. I cannot be cautious of you if you blend into the scenery. Obey traffic laws. If I have to stop at a red light, so do you."

Apparently Ms. Schneider likes to write her own "rules of the road" and disregards state laws.

2011 RAGBRAI-XXXIX

Registration opened today, Monday 15 November, 2010 for the 2011 (Des Moines) egisters Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI-XXXIX) and will remain open until 15 February, 2011 for manual (i.e., paper/non-electronic) applications and 1 April for electronic/on-line applications. Entire week long riders will be limited to 8,500 with an additional 1,500 single day riders (per each day of the ride). You can enter as an individual, a group or individual searching for a group by checking out their web-site at: http://ragbrai.com/ and clicking on Registration. Due to the popularity of this ride final selection (of all groups/riders) will be by Lottery and though chances of getting in are well above average, but it JUST wouldn't hurt to be pre-register (on-line), have waivers signed and turned in to the Des Moines Register and have all final(refundable) payments made early.

The route for 2011 will be annouced on January 29, 2011. If you look at all the previous rides, you can expect the 2011 route to be around 500 miles with averages of 50-65 miles per day (...and one or two days being so close to a full blown Century it is scary).

The event itself will take place starting 22 July, 2011 starting somewhere on the East side of the state (on the Missouri or Sioux Rivers)through 30 July, 2011 and ending somewhere on the West side of the state (on the Mississippi River). In between is an entire state full of some of the most friendly and hospitable people that you will ever meet in your life (...go to the website and read up on all the "chuch lady pies" and pit cooked BBQ sandwiches).

This is intended to be a fun RIDE and not a RACE (...I've heard rumor that Lance Armstrong wannabe's MAY make it to the beer trucks in the overnight town long before anyone else but that doesn't automatically guarantee them ALL of the "chuch lady pie").

I will know if the 2-3 people who are still undecided if they are going to ride in our group in a week or two. There is a POSSIBILITY that we may have a couple of openings in our group (I am originally from Iowa and riding with some folks I graduated HS in NW Iowa with). Regardless, I will be in my RV as a SAG wagon (provided WE get drawn in the Lottery) and will be happy to haul some gear and spare parts for anybody else who wants to ride but will not have a support vehicle. There is transportation provided to haul all your stuff but as you can image with 10,000 riders...chances of you AND your gear being at the same place at the same time COULD be a bit on the risky side.

Bike Ped Public Input Session, 6 PM Wednesday 17 November at Independence Park Tennis Center

Reminder:

You are invited to the bicycle and pedestrian safety public education campaign Public input session. We need your input to formulate a campaign to inform not just cyclists and pedestrians, but the motorists with whom we share the roads with radio, TV, billboards, or whatever media is required.

We need your reaction on the proposals, as well as input on areas of most concern to you, to change the campaign to what is most important to you.

The session will be Wednesday evening 17 November starting at 6 PM in Room 137 at the BREC Independence Park Tennis Recreation and Fitness Center. The center is located at the corner of Independence Boulevard (Government St.) and Lobdell, next to the fire station.

There will be a brief introduction followed by facilitated table discussions and a questionnaire to share your ideas.

The completed LAMRT Feasibility Study will be presented at the October CRPC Transportation Policy Committee meeting, and you are welcome to attend this public meeting.

Eric Poche, of the SJB Group (one of the authors) will present the completed study at the meeting 1:30 PM Tuesday October 26 at the Bluebonnet Library.

The study describes trail benefits, trail dimensions and amenities, cost estimate, and logical pieces for implementation. When all phases are complete, the trail will run between Audubon Park in New Orleans and Downtown Baton Rouge. The study was jointly funded by the US Corps of Engineers and Parish governments along the way (East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Ascension, St. James, St. John the Baptist, and St. Charles)

Parish Presidents from the Baton Rouge MPO (including trail participants East Baton Rouge, Iberville, and Ascension parishes) are expected to be at the meeting to receive the document.

This is another milestone towards in improving livability in our communities.

Baton Rouge Bicycle Club Fall Century

When: Sunday, October 10th, 2010
Where: Centenary College, Jackson, LA

Join the BRBC for a ride through the rolling terrain of the East and West Feliciana parishes. Included in the fee are tours of Rosedown Plantation and the Oakley House at Audubon State Historic Site. There will be SAG stops at these locations along the route.

BRBC will provide to participants: lunch (11:00am til 3:30 pm), full SAG support, maps, road markings, rest stops with restroom facilities, water, snacks, and sports drinks. All pre-registered riders will receive one free Blinky 7 back red light for their bike. Free one-year membership in the Baton Rouge Bicycle Club is included with participation.

Ride lengths are 33, 52, 63, and 100 miles. Registration the day of the event opens at 6:45 am. Departure time for the routes is 7:30 am for the 100 mile, and 8:00 am for the 33, 52, and 63 routes.

On October 9th, friends, family and Fusion Health and Fitness in Prairieville will team up to help fight hunger in Ascension Parish by hosting the ONE CAN Make a Difference Charity Ride. The goal of this ride is to donate canned goods and raise money through rider fees to give to the food pantry at the Fellowship Center in Gonzales.

Please join us for a day of "giving" to our community, fun fellowship with family and friends and great cycling. 100% of your entry fee will go towards purchasing food for the Fellowship Center located in Gonzales.

This year the BRBC Spring Century will be part of the West Feliciana Memorial Weekend Classic. The ride will include four routes: 100 miles departing at 7:30am, 50 and 61 miles both departing at 8:00am, and a family route of 21 miles departing at 9:00am. All routes will start at the West Feliciana Sports Park, take the riders through the beautiful rolling hills of West Feliciana Parish, past live oaks and plantations, and then back to the Sports Park.

Included with the ride are: rest stops with snacks, water, sport drinks, and toilet facilities; route maps; route markings; pre-ride announcements; t-shirts; and participation in the West Feliciana Classic Festival events. A roving support van will be available to support tired bikes and riders. With participation, the rider will also receive a one year membership in the Baton Rouge Bicycle Club.

Fee is $25 for early registration, $30 after May 28th. Registration the day of the ride will open at 6:30 am.

According to the official report filed by the State Police, Mr. Hahn gave a statement in which he said he was dirving south on River Road: "eating a breakfast sandwich from McDonald's when he struck a bicyclist riding south on River Road in the southbound lane."

So much for the unavoidable accident claim by his attorney. After hitting Mike, Hahn didn't stop, drove away from the scene and went to work. The judge set bond at FIFTEEN THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!! Thats right, $10, 000 for running Mike down, $5,000 for leaving the scene and $100 each for the traffic charges. Judge Johnson set the bond which I am sure was posted before Hahn spent any time in jail.

We have to make ouselves heard about this. If we don't then you can be sure that Hahn won't spend anytime in jail. Its up to us to let the District Attorney and the Judge know that enough is enough. This man needs to be convicted and go to jail as an example to other criminally negligent drivers.

I also want to remind all of you about the Colin Goodier Memorial Ride on Saturday, June 19, starting at 8:00 from Pharr Park. We need to turn out in big numbers to make our voices heard.

Looks like Hahn will be the first person in the state to be charged with breaking the "3-foot law" (the Colin Goodier act). This law is to protect everyone not in a motorized vehicle who is standing, walking, running or cycling on a roadway. You have to pass people no closer than 3 feet. It's the law!

The Ride of Silence this Wednesday

The Ride of Silence is an international rolling memorial to cyclists injured and killed by motorists. It happens to be this Wendesday, May 17th from 7-8PM. The Baton Rouge version will be starting from the parking lot on Skip Bertman and River Road across from the Vet School. The ride will progress at 8-12mph for about 10 miles through downtown, midcity, and LSU and will be silent. Helmets are required and lights are reccomended.

I have confirmed media coverage from WBRZ and others for Wednesday. Let's show motorists that we are here to stay.

I would urge everyone here to find a Ride of Silence in their area and participate. I would also urge everyone to continue to advocate for safer roads and respect from motorists by contacting your local, state, and national politicians to support bicycling legislation, give to the League of American Bicyclists, join your local bike advocacy group, and do everything in your power to be seen and follow the rules of the road.

Following the ride, there will be a benefit for Mike Bitton at Chelsea's under the Perkins Rd overpass. The LSU cycling team is working on this now and will have more details soon. Please consider comming out to help support Mike and his family.

Ride of Silence Ride Wednesday...

Fellow Cyclists,

In light of the recent hit and run severely injuring Mike Bitton, we are moving the Ride of Silence start to the parking lot on Skip Bertman and River Road across from the Vet School near the site of the collision. The ride will still begin at 7PM, head down Nicholson to Government to Acadian and back to the Vet School. We will be done with this 10 mile loop around 8PM

Everyone is invited to Chelsea's under the Perkins Road overpass following the ride for a benefit to raise money for Mike Bitton. The LSU Cycling team is organizing a benefit to help defray the massive costs him and his family are incurring following the accident.

Remember, Helmets are mandatory for the ride and lights are highly recommended. If possible, wear a black armband for those who have died, or a red armband if you have been injured by a motorist.

This is just sad! Hit and Run, Come on Burton Guidry, really?

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - State police have arrested the man they believe is responsible for sending an LSU graduate student to the hospital with life threatening injuries. State police say Marshall Hahn, 30, from Lacombe accompanied by an attorney, turned himself in around 2 p.m. Sunday. Hahn is accused of hitting 34-year-old Michael Bitton as he rode his bicycle along river road early Saturday. Police say after hitting Bitton, Hahn took off in his friends black 2005 Toyota Tundra. State Trooper Russell Graham says after getting a tip from the public police were able to find the Tundra, which led to Hahn turning himself in. He now faces a long list of charges including felony hit and run and negligent injury. "You get in a crash and I understand people get scared when things like that happen," said Graham. "But you need to stop and you need to check on these people to see what's going on. State law requires you to stop and render aid."

Hahn's attorney, Burton Guidry, released the following statement. "Our investigation so far reveals that the accident was unavoidable and that the cyclist was traveling River Road in an area that has no bicycle path and inadequate shoulders, and where cyclists must travel within the roadway in the path of oncoming vehicles." He went on to say, "It is our understanding that at least four cyclists have died in the past 10 years after being hit by vehicles in the same area of River Road. "Marshall and his family sincerely regret the error in judgment in his not remaining at or near the accident scene. Marshall and his family are praying for Mr. Bitton's full recovery and wish him and his family Godspeed."

Bitton is still in the intensive care unit fighting for his life.

2010 MS Gran Prix Team Geaux Race Cat 5 Report
Road Race
Kevin, Gregg, Rupert and Chris L. aka “747 Jumbo Jet” participated in the Cat 5 road race on Saturday morning. After a good warm up we waited for the start, which happened to be on top of a hill. The race began and 75 racers accelerated from 0 to 30 mph in about a minute, Kevin was the only team member to stay in the front of the pack. Gregg, me and Rupert were at the back of the pack when in the first 2 miles a large crash of carbon fiber, aluminum and riders hit the pavement blocking the entire road. Gregg, Rupert and I made it through unharmed but we lost the leaders and never would see them again. The rest of the race for us was uneventful until the town of Wesson where the arrows marking the course got us confused with the arrows marking the circuit race. The rider in front of Gregg actually turned around to head the opposite direction, which made Gregg do the same then we figured it out and continued in the right direction. On the second big climb of the race, Gregg was able to drop me and eventually catch and pass a couple of other riders prior to the finish. I continued on to the finish by myself as did Rupert who was a few minutes behind me. Kevin maintained his position with the lead pack and was able to sprint to a 11th place finish, great job Kevin!
We had hoped to stay with the main pack longer to learn some things but the crash prevented that and taught us a valuable lesson, stay in front of the pack if possible. We plan to increase our training to better our chances of hanging on when the pack surges.
Time Trial
Saturday afternoon found us warming up on the 3 mile time trial course, which was actually pretty nice with some gradual ups and downs. Rupert went off first, then me, Kevin and Gregg at 30 second intervals. At about half way through the race I was closing the distance on Rupert, which I later found out was having back issues. At about 2 K to go Kevin passed me then a few seconds later the rider that started behind Gregg flew by me at about 35 mph. Kevin passed Rupert in the last few meters but the fast guy passed both of them, which meant he passed up all four of our team riders for a 2 minute gain! That guy went on to post a 6.08 winning time. Kevin averaged 24.4 mph for the race, Gregg 23, Chris 22.2 and Rupert 21.5, great job by all.
Circuit Race
The circuit race course was a 1 mile trek through a community college campus with one gradual climb, one short steep climb and a few downhill’s. The course was actually pretty fast and not too tight. The start field was less than 40 riders, which was good. Team Geaux Race started to the back as the leaders again pushed the pace very fast at the beginning of the race. Gregg, Rupert and I fell off the back and after a few laps we exited the course and watched the race from the sidelines. Kevin fell from the lead group but hung in to finish the race. The final sprint of the 10 or so riders in the lead pack resulted in a 2 rider crash; both were bruised but walked away.

Overall Kevin finished 18th out of the 75 riders that started, great job!

Lessons Learned
1. Stay in front of the pack if you can.
2. Increase interval training to be able to hang when the pack surges, i.e. training races.

Red Bug Hill Challenge, May 1, 2010

Get ready for the RED BUG HILL CHALLENGE on Saturday, May 1, 2010!

Start and finish will be at Mike and Marie Rourke's farm on Hwy. 421 in St. Francisville.

ALL proceeds from this ride will benefit people in Louisiana with Spina Bifida. The ride is held in memory of our son Jordy, born in 1987 with Spina Bifida, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in May 2008.

Rides of 20, 40, and 60 miles, as well as a 1-mile fun run, will wind through the rolling hills of West Feliciana Parish and end on "Red Bug Hill."

There will be an optional time trial up "Red Bug Hill," (the Challenge). Age group awards and extra raffle tickets will be given for those who participate in the Challenge. Drawings will be held for thousands of dollars worth of bikes and merchandise after the ride.

Bicycle Pace Line Etiquette

Riders,

The weather should still be nice for Thursday at 4:30, hope to see you there.

On another note, I received some complaints about the ride I missed on Tuesday, it seems that there were several violations of pace line etiquette taking place. I think this is indicative of a large group of mixed skill riders so I'm proposing some guidelines for this ride. Please pass this along to those that ride with us that aren't on the email list.

What I would like to propose is that we have sections of the ride for ramping up the speed as well as sections for regrouping. Basically, we need to regroup after we make turns then slowly ramp the speed up following pace line etiquette until the group chooses to slow down or make another turn. If you want to do intervals, please drop out of the pace line and do your thing then return to the pace line if you so desire. The goal is to keep the pace line safe, together as much as possible and moving fast.

If the group keeps growing the way it has been we may have to double pace line to keep from getting too spread out. If this occurs, please follow the pace line etiquette but roll out to the right if you are in the right line and to the left if you are on the left line. Allow room for the riders rolling out to drop back.

Please read the attached Pace Line Etiquette file or visit the http://hubpages.com/hub/Bicycle-Pace-line-Etiquette link to learn more about pace line riding. Below are 4 key areas I would like everyone to know.

Ride at an even speed when leading. Hold the speed of the rider that just gave up the lead until he has time to get on the back then increase speed gradually if you want to. If you are too tired or weak to do your turn at the front of the pace line, don’t pull at the front. Just rotate smoothly through without disrupting the group's pace.
No sudden movements by any single rider, this can be disastrous. This means that abrupt braking, swerving, and any type of erratic riding is always a dangerous, poor technique.
Do not brake or soft pedal at the front of a pace line, this causes the ripple in the “train” behind you.
Keep pedaling as you move off the front. Don't stop or slow your cadence until the following rider has begun to pull through. Don’t drag race the overtaking rider. When the overtaking rider has pulled up adjacent to you, then drop your cadence not your gearing and fall back.

Join the Baton Rouge Bike Club (BRBC) the first Saturday of each month for a beginner's bike ride. Rides begin at 9:00 at Webb Memorial Park's parking lot at the corner of Broussard and Country Club Drive. These rides will begin in March and conclude in October 2010.

Rides will be at a slow comfortable pace and will meander through surrounding neighborhoods. Distance will depend on the participants and the weather but will be fairly short.

Ride to Live Cancer Classic Road Circuit Races at the Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, AL, April 3, 2010. We'll be racing on the same track that the Alabama Grand Prix Indy car race will run the following week. Please pass this information along to your club, team and fellow cycling racers.
