Red Bug Hill Challenge is on!!!

Red Bug Hill Challenge is on!!! As some of you may have noticed, we've had a little rain. Ok, a LOT of rain, lightning, and thunder. More is forecast for Saturday so I'm sure you're all wondering, "How are the wet roads going to impact my time up Red Bug Hill, and what can I do to get an advantage over my buddy?!?" Well, let a little air out of your skinny tires for a little more traction and plan to make it up to West Fel because the event will happen rain or shine! Rain or Shine Red Bug Hill is a GO. Mike and Marie are making worst-case-scenario preparations so no excuses. If the weather is too bad to ride there's plenty of room in the barn. Support Spina Bifida and enjoy the food, music, and fun that always comes with this great event. You aren't going to be riding in the rain in Baton Rouge so don't just sit inside by yourself, come enjoy the rainy day with friends while supporting a good cause. You can always ride the trainer when you get home ;) www.redbughill.com Directions Events and registration are located at 13918 Hwy 421, St Francisville, LA 70775. PLEASE NOTE, the address is rural and GPS and Google maps do not always accurately portray the location on Hwy 421. Directions from downtown Baton Rouge: Take 1-110 NORTH all the way to the end. Turn RIGHT at the end of the exit ramp and go NORTH on Hwy 61. Continue on Hwy 61 for approximately 30 miles. Proceed THROUGH the town of St. Francisville. Approximately 8 miles NORTH of town, turn RIGHT on Hwy. 421. 13918 Hwy 421 is 3 miles down on your left. Chris Clark

NOLA Motorsports Park There will be 2 groups

Triathlete Night and Bike Racing at NOLA Motorsports Park Thursday! 2 days from now, April 25th. Come Race. NOLA Motorsports Park There will be 2 groups: One group for the tri racers and the other for the bike racers. The track is open to ride on just after 5pm. Mass start training race starts at 6pm! (ish) You don't have to be in the race to ride on the track. There's plenty of room. We'll have 2 races for everyone with a short cool-down in between. Race distances will be about 15 miles (we'll determine how many laps we'll be doing at the track). The New Orleans Chamber of Commerce will be there hosting a meeting and we'll be the backdrop entertainment. They may ask us to leave the track for about 5 minutes so they can take a couple of VIP's around the course in a race car, but it shouldn't last more than 5 minutes, then we'll be back out there. Rain date to be determined. All Summer long! We'll be announcing Monday or Tuesday (or earlier) what event (if any) we'll be having out on the track. Bring your families and friends! There's a lot of activities and services at the track. Seriously, you come out there alone, you'll be immediately on the phone calling people to come out and see what they have and what you're doing. Track opens to bikes when the last car or motorbike leaves the track at 5PM. Get your shoes on, take a few laps when we are given the "All Clear". Assume that you won't be allowed onto the track until 5:30. All races will start after 6. The course will be open only to bicycles. No cars, no motors. Mass Start training races: Will begin at 6:00ish. This does not mean that the course will be closed to others who want to ride on the course. Just be respectful when the group comes past. If you have a bike... come out! The course is 40 feet wide at its narrowest. Most of the corners will be full speed for us, that means pedaling the whole way around, no need for braking. All the corners are just big sweepers at 30mph. Here's a video of a fairly slow parade lap of the main course: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEIENJDFg04 The track has a full bar/restaurant clubhouse at the last turn. It's quite fancy and beautiful. There's an upstairs viewing area or you can stand close to the last turn on the bricked patio and watch the action happen. We are not encouraged to bring pots of Jambalaya or ice chests of beer (they won't be checking cars, but this is a $72 million dollar facility and they are trying to turn a profit on anything they can). They are giving us the track for free, considering track rental runs $12,000 to $20,000 per day, this is a tremendous gift. We'll have all of Pitt Row (Gasoline Alley) all to ourselves which has covered shelter, etc. So tents, etc won't be necessary. There's electricity, etc, so run whatcha brung. Go-Kart rental races run until 9:00. I'm just asking personally, that you wait until AFTER the bike race(s) to walk on over to the Go-kart track. We'll do the bike racing first, then maybe a bunch of us will head over and get embarrassed by anyone under 140lbs on the go-kart track. They are pretty fast and the course has 88 different configurations. It's a riot. Go kart races are 10 minutes. It's enough. Believe me, I'm a guy that never has enough of extreme sports and excitement, 10 minutes on these things will leave you whipped and not wanting another session... unless you're 12. Here's a video of one of their longer configurations on the Kart track (The Kart track is completely seperate from the car racing track): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odhi8AP4PXI It's $5 to enter the park. Here's the address: 11075 Nicolle Boulevard; Avondale, LA 70094. It takes 20-25 minutes to get there from the East bank. It's very easy to get there. See you Thursday Ken Bellau

tragic death of Frank J. Bercegeay...

Tommy Martinez spoke about the tragic death of Frank J. Bercegeay at the Parish council meeting but then pivoted to talk about efforts to pave the levee to, "give you a place to ride." Yes, bikes are great for recreation and we want to encourage that. We ALSO need to encourage complete streets throughout the area where we - our families, friends, and neighbors - can use a bike when we need or want to go to the store, school, work, or visit friends. Ascension needs to act before more people are killed. Please go to the link below to Mr. Martinez know you support bikes in ALL of Louisiana. Feel free to cut and paste the above paragraph. http://bit.ly/14hsBVA Why does this matter to you if you don't live in Ascension? As Baton Rouge and surrounding areas continue to grow we become more connected and drivers who drive in Ascension, Livingston, etc. drive in Baton Rouge, West Feliciana, East Feliciana, etc. Bicycle and pedestrian facilities are not only for the city. You can avoid 'problem areas' all you want but they will not avoid you. If you ride River Road you've seen the increase in traffic due to the casino and it's only going to get worse if drivers and city officials do not learn to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians. Only when we can change the car culture of the entire area will we truly have safer roads and complete streets.

brand new Carbon Zone’s will be landing this month

A reminder that our brand new Carbon Zone’s will be landing this month. If you’re like a lot of us- you spend a great portion of your road rides searching for hidden dirt roads or shredding on gravel whenever possible. With input from Barry Wicks, Kona designed this bike to be the ultimate endurance road racing machine that is just as capable on dirt & gravel as it is on tarmac. The Zone is the rocket ship that Barry Wicks piloted to a top 5 finish at The Rouge Roubaix this past weekend in Baton Rouge, LA. a project starting that may affect your normal biking....

From Nancy Kulheimer: Cyclists...Be careful out there. I know we are always trying to avoid hazards: For those that park at the Split and ride the training loop....or for those that ride between the Casino and the Split...there is now a project starting that may affect your normal biking. There are several trailers in the LA DOTD lot at the Split. I chatted with Matt Milton of Beard Construction about their project for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The plan is the remove the temporary bagged sand from the levee top and raise the levee. Matt indicated that they will have up to 200-300 workers between the Casino and the Split over the next 6 months with lots of trucks, dirt, earth movers, etc.. I envision lots of sand and dirt on the roadway, so biking may be challenging. Parking will be limited, and do not block the entrance to the DOTD lot or you may be towed. The project will gear up to a 7 day a week, 24 hour/D operation. They don't anticipate closing the road like last year's work near LSU. But you may want to avoid this area for the next 6 months.

the annual “No Such Thing as Impossible®” bike ride...

My dear friends and fellow cyclists: The road of life is full of challenges and difficulties. No matter how big they are and how daunting they may seem, I firmly believe that if we accept these challenges as soon as possible, we can carry on to do extraordinary things in spite of them. After all, adversities are sent to us to enhance the purpose of our lives. These ideas are what inspired me to found the annual “No Such Thing as Impossible®” bike ride to benefit the McMains Children’s Developmental Center of Baton Rouge and its Wheels to Succeed program, which will celebrate its fifth year on March 17 in St. Francisville. We are looking forward to another wonderful event and successful fundraiser, but I have recently encountered a personal obstacle on the way: On Monday, February 18th, I will start another chemotherapy treatment in Houston, Texas. The treatment will last 3-4 months, which will unfortunately prevent me from attending the event. However, my doctors are optimistic, as am I, that we can once again overcome what is just another challenge on the road of life. And I want to reassure you that my physical presence is not necessary for the generous community of Baton Rouge and local cyclists to mobilize in solidarity with my mission: Helping the beautiful children at the McMains Center who need our support. I will be with you that day both in spirit and through the presence of my children Carlos Mario, Ana Marcela and Sebastian, my grandchildren Alek and Lucas, and our families. I ask that you participate at this event in my name. Bring your families, and invite all your friends to register at www.wheelstosucceed.org. Please remember that this event is for everyone, and you do not have to ride a bike – just come have fun and enjoy the company of the wonderful children from the McMain's Center. If you would like to help sponsor the event, please visit the above website for details. I thank you so much for your help, and I hope to see you again at next year’s event. Always remember: There is no such thing as impossible! Sincerely, Jairo Alvarez-Botero

trail maintenance volunteers

Attention all trail maintenance volunteers: I am keeping a spreadsheet with a total of TM hours by person and date. I only have records from the sign-in sheet from the BREC-BRAMBA work days. So,... 1) If you show up to BREC work day, please sign the waiver/sign-in form so that the club can accurately track volunteer hours. At the Jan event I had only 11 names but 14 or 15 showed up. 2) If you do significant trail work outside of TM days, please send me an email with date, hours worked, a description of the work project, and photos of "before" and "after". I do NOT troll on FB day and night so if you post your work but do not notify me I may miss your post. Thank you and I hope to see a good turnout to our next TM day Saturday, Feb 26th, 9:00 AM at Hooper. Yvette Woodward

We had 12 intrepid spirits brave The Beast Trail for 6 Hours on Saturday

We had 12 intrepid spirits brave The Beast Trail for 6 Hours on Saturday. Contrary to the concerns of some, all 12 racers competed without serious injury to life or limb. The weather and trail were PERFECT!!! A big thanks to everyone who came and raced on Saturday! The results are shown below. I didn't have the ages for a couple of the racers. Please send me your age if you would like it included in the results. Please let me know if I have misspelled anyone's name or if you notice any other problems with the results. I want to give a BIG thanks to folks who worked on the trail prior to the race and who volunteered during the race. Wayne Cox, Jeff Vaughan, Jason Evers, and Blair Krogh put in dozens of hours prior to the race getting the trail in tiptop shape. Mike Collier, Travis Hill, and John Wild helped out on race day to keep things running smoothly. I plan to officially submit the race results to USA Cycling tomorrow or Wednesday after I make sure everything is correct. Please let me know about any problems or concerns with the results as soon as possible. Charley Rome

I thought I would share this here: BIKE SAFETY CLASSES: ONE HOUR TO SAFER RIDING The Capital Regional Planning Commission and Bike and Pedestrian Associates are pleased to announce FREE one hour bike classes that WILL improve your safety while riding your bike on the street, in bike lanes, or on multiuse trails. This class will help prevent you from crashing by avoiding hazards, and riding in a predictable and safe way where other riders, and drivers are less likely to crash into YOU. This is class is not aimed at super fit and high speed riders. The techniques taught can be used by riders of ALL abilities. LSU has begun enforcement of traffic laws in place for cyclists, and this course has all the information you need to avoid receiving a citation. Students, commuters, fitness and recreational riders are encouraged to attend. All classes are open to adults (18 and older) with drivers licence knowledge of the rules of the road. Classes will be conducted Weeknights and Saturdays at the BREC Independence Park (Lobdell @ Government/Independence) meeting room complex. Tuesday 22 Jan @ 6:30 PM Thursday 24 Jan @ 6:30 PM Saturday 26 Jan @ 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM Monday 28 Jan @ 6:30 PM Tuesday 29 Jan @6:30 PM Wednesday 30 Jan @ 6:30 PM Thursday 31 Jan @ 6:30 PM Advanced registration is highly recommended, as class sizes are limited to 12 people per session.
