15th Annual Parrot Head Bike Ride for the Environment

Saturday, October 23, 2010 Rides begin at 9 a.m. (registration begins at 7:30 a.m.) Rides begin and end at Mary Ann Brown Nature Preserve outside of St. Francisville (Across from The Bluffs – directions on registration form) There will be two rides: a 19-mile and a 27-mile ride. Pre-registration fee is $20. Registration fee the day of the ride is $25. Registration fee includes a ride packet, lunch, and a 15th Annual Bike Ride for the Environment T-shirt. Acorns of Hope is a 4-day bicycle ride

Hey Everybody! Check out this very cool bicycle ride/community service event going on right here in south LA next month. Please join for the fun and good vibes. The Acorns of Hope (AOH): Acorns of Hope is a 4-day bicycle ride from Church Point to New Orleans, by way of Lake Charles, Raceland and Houma. The primary goal of AOH is to reforest the natural cheniers of Southern Louisiana. Many of these belts of live oak trees were destroyed during Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Their disappearance has led to a massive increase in the rate of coastal erosion, which now exceeds the loss of a football field every forty minutes. Bob Thibodeaux, a local arborist (tree care professional) and tree farmer, set out four years ago to tackle this threat. He aimed to plant 10,000 quality live oak trees along the coastal plain within five years. In support of that effort, he created an annual bike ride. For one week each November, cyclists and arborists alike are invited to ride country roads, plant trees, and experience the hospitality and charm of Southern Louisiana through its food, its people, and its history. In concert with this ride, Bob also holds various community events throughout the year, with the help of his team at Bob’s Tree Preservation. These including tree plantings, anti-litter and pollution efforts, and education initiatives. Participation in the AOH bike ride is open to all. 2011 will mark the fourth annual AOH; come join riders from east, north, south and west (as far away as Canada) and really “dig” south Louisiana! We promise that you will see and enjoy your state as never before! Travel Details: Participants should arrange to be in Church Point in the morning/early afternoon of Tuesday, November 15th. If you are flying into Lafayette, shuttles will be arranged to pickup participants from the airport. Be ready for a big bowl of squirrel gumbo and a hearty welcoming that evening! The AOH will end around noon on Saturday, November 19th. Therefore, participants should arrange transportation from NOLA. Event Details: 1) There will be plenty of opportunities to plant trees. 2) There will be numerous organized events during the AOH, mostly tree plantings at local schools. While participants are always welcome to join in, they are not required to do so and are entirely free to choose which events they wish to attend. 3) There will be several options for riding bicycles each day. Some participants will ride more, some less. There will be at least one 100km day in the schedule. 4) There will be support for the ride. 5) Local organizations and individuals will donate many delicious meals. However, participants will likely be responsible for some of their own food. 6) AOH organizers are working to secure free accommodations for at least part of the week. Otherwise, participants will be responsible for their own lodging. Friday, October 7; 7:00-9:00PM. This will be an opportunity for those that have not competed on the track to get their upgrade to category 4. We will focus on track rules and riding in groups at race pace, specific to the events being held during the Track Championships. Groups will start small and increase in numbers as riders progress. For those that have been on the track before, this will be a rare opportunity to get some time in with a large pack. For those planning to participate in the Track Championships on 10.29.11: if your annual racing license does not indicate cat4 for your track classification, you will be limited to individual timed events (this applies to masters, jr, and women). New Orleans' designation as a League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly City!

Mayor Landrieu announced today New Orleans' designation as a League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly City. New Orleans received Bronze status after 4 years as an Honorable Mention. Jamie Wine, Executive Director of Bike Easy - the New Orleans bicycle advocacy organization, thanked local volunteers, supporters and donors for their hard work and commitment to getting New Orleans recognized. "Without them," said Wine, "we could never had made it this far." Wine continued by encouraging Bike Easy supporters to continue to hold "elected officials, administrators and each other" accountable to reach the next level in the League of American Bicyclists' multifaceted Bicycle Friendly America program. BRASS salutes Bike Easy and the efforts they have made to successfully join Baton Rouge as a LAB Bicycle Friendly Community! Congratulations!

Baton Rouge Bicycle Club Fall Century

The Baton Rouge Bicycle Club Fall Century will be held Sunday, October 16th. The ride starts and ends at a private residence on Hwy 421 north of Saint Francisville, Louisiana. The address is 13918 Hwy 421 (this is the same place that the Red Bug Hill Challenge was held). The ride will include routes of 25, 50, 62, and 100 mile lengths. With participation, the rider will receive a free pair of BRBC socks. These socks come in two designs: one that matches the 2007 BRBC Jersey design (red, blue, and grey), and one that matches the 2009 BRBC Jersey design (blue, gold, pelican jersey). Included the day of the ride are: full SAG support, lunch (11:00 am to 3:30 pm), maps, road markings, pre-ride announcements, and rest stops with restroom facilities, snacks, water, and sports drinks. Fee is $25 pre-registration, $35 day of the ride. Ride day registration opens at 6:45 am, first riders take off at 7:30 am. Click here for online registration. Baton Rouge Battle Mountain Bike Race

Baton Rouge Battle Mountain Bike Race at the Comite River Trails park on September 25th. This race is part of both the LA Championship Series and the SCRCS racing series with a fairly large draw and some really tough competition, so come out and test yourself against the best mountain bikers in the region. If you are new to mountain bike racing we have a Cat 3/beginner class that follows a tamer route and bypasses some of the tougher technical sections of the trail.(No Skid Mark or Newton's Drop) Cat-1 27.5 mi. Cat-2 22 mi. Cat-3 11 mi. The course will get taped off Saturday morning so you can come out a pre-ride the course without getting lost or taking the wrong route.
