Another senseless deathI knew Nathan Crowson. Now he is dead. A drunk driver ran him over and killed him while he was riding on Perkins Road. Daniel Morris, who was riding with Nathan, remains in the hospital. But why were Nathan and Daniel riding on Perkins Road at night? They have the legal right and responsibility to be there, to be sure, but why would they be there?Just like everyone else on Perkins Road, and all the other streets of Baton Rouge, they were getting where they wanted to go. Unfortunately, because Baton Rouge has spent the past 60 years creating a city with only one viable means of transportation – the personal automobile – they had no choice but to ride Perkins Road.There are no bicycle paths paralleling Perkins Road. There are no bicycle routes through the neighborhoods because many of the developments are not connected. There is only one way to get to many places in town on a bicycle and that is on the road with motorists.This doesn't have to be the way things are. Cities are built. We could have built bicycle facilities, sidewalks, and a mass transit system with dedicated on-street facilities to be used in conjunction with motor vehicles over the past 60 years but we didn't. We gave our city over to the automobile and it is killing us every day. Not just bicyclists but other motorists and pedestrians die.For the past six years the Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) has been advocating for bicycling and walking in Baton Rouge. Two years ago, in fact, BRASS submitted a bicycle route that will connect the Levee Path with Highland Observatory. This route uses existing, low-traffic and low-speed streets. A few short connectors will have to be built at minimal cost. Why hasn't is been created?The Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) calls upon the Mayor's office, the Metropolitan Council, the Department of Public Works, and BREC:• to work together to adopt a Complete Streets policy for the City-Parish;• to create, fund, and implement a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plan for the city-parish as soon as possible;• to establish a bicycle / pedestrian coordinator position within the governance of the City-Parish with oversight authority to ensure new facilities are created appropriately and in accordance with current standards and best practices, and;• to immediately begin working on implementing a safe bicycle and pedestrian route roughly paralleling Perkins Road and another roughly paralleling Highland Road.Join BRASS is creating a safer Baton Rouge for all roadway users. My name is Rich Gallo and I am with Law Enforcement United - a group of police officers who, each spring, bicycle ride in honor of those law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty the year before. This coming year, we are going to start in Baton Rouge, because a officer (retired Customs) in our group was killed while out on a training bike ride. His name was J. Rob Moorhead - and he lived in Denham Springs.Our group consists of approx 12 riders (with some support staff) - and from Baton Rouge we will proceed to Brunswick, GA where the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is located; and then continue bicycling to Washington, DC (getting into DC at the start of National Police Week). If possible, I would like to talk to someone in the Baton Rouge Bicycle Club - to prepare a route from BR / Denham Springs out towards Mississippi. I do have the Adventure Cycling Association maps (Southern Tier, Section 6) but this map details a route that starts from St. Francisville, goes north to Norwood, east to Kentwood before getting into Bogalusa. Please join for the fun and good vibes.The Acorns of Hope (AOH):Acorns of Hope is a 4-day bicycle ride from Church Point to New Orleans, by way of Lake Charles, Raceland and Houma. The primary goal of AOH is to reforest the natural cheniers of Southern Louisiana. Many of these belts of live oak trees were destroyed during Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Their disappearance has led to a massive increase in the rate of coastal erosion, which now exceeds the loss of a football field every forty minutes.Bob Thibodeaux, a local arborist (tree care professional) and tree farmer, set out four years ago to tackle this threat. He aimed to plant 10,000 quality live oak trees along the coastal plain within five years. In support of that effort, he created an annual bike ride. For one week each November, cyclists and arborists alike are invited to ride country roads, plant trees, and experience the hospitality and charm of Southern Louisiana through its food, its people, and its history. In concert with this ride, Bob also holds various community events throughout the year, with the help of his team at Bob’s Tree Preservation. These including tree plantings, anti-litter and pollution efforts, and education initiatives.Participation in the AOH bike ride is open to all. 2011 will mark the fourth annual AOH; come join riders from east, north, south and west (as far away as Canada) and really “dig” south Louisiana! We promise that you will see and enjoy your state as never before!Travel Details:Participants should arrange to be in Church Point in the morning/early afternoon of Tuesday, November 15th. If you are flying into Lafayette, shuttles will be arranged to pickup participants from the airport.Be ready for a big bowl of squirrel gumbo and a hearty welcoming that evening!The AOH will end around noon on Saturday, November 19th. The Baton Rouge Bicycle Club Fall Century will be held Sunday, October 16th. The ride starts and ends at a private residence on Hwy 421 north of Saint Francisville, Louisiana. The address is 13918 Hwy 421 (this is the same place that the Red Bug Hill Challenge was held). The ride will include routes of 25, 50, 62, and 100 mile lengths. With participation, the rider will receive a free pair of BRBC socks. These socks come in two designs: one that matches the 2007 BRBC Jersey design (red, blue, and grey), and one that matches the 2009 BRBC Jersey design (blue, gold, pelican jersey). Included the day of the ride are: full SAG support, lunch (11:00 am to 3:30 pm), maps, road markings, pre-ride announcements, and rest stops with restroom facilities, snacks, water, and sports drinks. Sunday - Eat breakfast as a group or on your own and cycle back to Hattiesburg.

The American Red Cross is hosting the Fourth Annual Tour du Rouge on May 6-11, 2012. It is a 526-mile, 6-day cycling tour from Houston to New Orleans. Lakefront 4-person Team Time Trial.. COUNTDOWN!!!

You now have only 10 days to get your team together! The first ever Lakefront 4-man Team Time Trial is coming up and time is running short. Everything you're used to will be the same, except it will all be completely different. We'll be using the long course (10.6 miles) and starting at the same time and place (Kona Cafe). We may start a little early depending on the readiness of me and the teams. People ask me every week "oh, I thought we start at 6?". No, I say in every e-mail I ever send, get there at 6, first rider/team off at 6:30. This Lakefront TTT will probably be used by many teams as a "dress rehearsal" for the LAMBRA TTT Championships the following weekend. If you are a Tri-athlete or a cyclist, you should consider doing both of these events, it'll really test your limits and make you a faster rider on your own. Follow cars might be allowed as well (for safety and video). We'll have mixed teams, Women's teams and Men's teams categories as well as any man/duck or other husbandry combinations that might show up.

Also, I'll need a few volunteers for numbering teams, driving follow vehicles, start line help and especially finish line "pickers". Bring binoculars if you have them.

Course is the entire length of Lakeshore Drive (10.6 miles).
Starting intervals between teams will be 1 minute. This is subject to change as well, depending on the number of teams.
Times will be recorded on the 3rd rider across the line. This is subject to change to 2nd person, we're still mulling it over since the course is kind of short. But this is a 4-man TTT and just dropping 2 people in the first 2 miles defeats the purpose of team work. However, we don't want to slow anyone down. We want your fastest times!

**As always, this is an unsanctioned, unfunded, uninsured, non-event on open roads with free flowing traffic. You are subject to all traffic laws and the rules or the road. You are riding at your own risk with 3 other people who are doing the same. Look at any video of the Tour de France TTT's and you'll see how difficult these events can be. Please don't stand in the road at the finish line. We missed a rider last time because of the crowd that overflowed onto the finish line.

The MS-training rides have started again this season and this Sunday's (July 24) ride will be at Alligator Bayou.
The start is at 8 AM at the Alligator Bayou parking lot. For those familiar in the area, the ride will follow the familiar route via Alligator Bayou to River Road and on to the split. The 36' route will be marked and there is a rest stop planned at Roberto's River Road restaurant.
Future training rides for this season will be mostly in the Abita Springs area. For details see the attached training ride schedule.

The actual MS-150 ride will be in the weekend of 1 and 2 October.

Questions about the closure of River Rd by Farr Park

There have been questions about the closure of River Rd by Farr Park. I spoke to the levee police yesterday and River Rd is only closed to vehicles, not cyclist. They are using highly sensitive equipment to monitor vibrations in the levee and vehicles interfere with this. They have been made aware of the tues/thurs training race and they said that is not a problem. That said, stay off the levee, no one is allowed on the levee

So, come out out and enjoy a ride without all of the threatening traffic while it last!

Ok guys and galls!

We are have the second annual Mt Driskill omnium this year but a bit earlier in the season and this time with an 8 am start rather than noon for the road race. Courses will be the same as last year. Cone join us for a great racing opportunity. Last year many people said it was the best lambra courses just really hot so we moved the dates up and started the races earlier. This year we have also added a 55+ cat that will start with the 40+ guys but be scored separately. So cone on out and bring your teammates!

I understand that the calendar says June and flyer says august. The race is the last weekend in June like the calendar states. Registration will be opening soon. Hope to see you guys there! Let's get this thing big!

Thursday May 12, 2011
The day started out a little cool with some cloud cover and little sun. The 20K and 40K road races were set to roll first, with the 10K, 5K and 1 mile timed trials to follow. After a good warm up, all of the contestants headed to the start line to begin the races. The course is a 10K loop with 3 right hand turns, a few rolling hills and good pavement. We started out in a double pace line with myself and the other 50-54 year old rider, Fred McLaughlin from Florida, on the front. About 2 miles into the race, we went single file with Fred taking the first pull. After we made the first turn we picked up the speed a little as I settled into a long pull. When I rolled off the front the group was still together but starting to gap a little on the back so I slipped in about 4 wheels back to keep an eye on Fred. When Fred took his turn pulling again he opened a little gap so I had to move around a couple of riders to get his wheel again. After the second turn and several riders taking their turn on the front, I moved to the front as we approached the largest hill on the course. I kept the speed up around 20 mph and split the field up. Now it was just 4 of us in the lead group, Fred, Robert, James and I. We continued to work together and slowly pick the pace up as we motored through the second loop. As we rounded the last turn headed to the finish line of the 20K, we spotted a pickup truck parked in out lane. I was leading and began to pick up speed when Fred stood up to sprint and pulled around me. We had to move to the left lane to avoid the truck then the truck started to move, we checked up a bit then continued the sprint. Fred was slightly ahead of me as we crossed the line at 35 mph, then the truck started to turn left in front of us. We were yelling for him to stop and I made the decision that I couldn’t stop in time so I gunned it again and slipped right in front of the truck with only inches to spare, I thought for sure I was going to get hit but we all made it by safely. Fred took the gold and I the silver for the 20K. We continued for 2 more loops to complete the 40K, this time I let Fred lead out in the sprint and passed him at the line for the Gold medal.
After a 30 minute break we were up to the line again for the 10K timed trial, which would be one lap on the 10K loop. I went off first and never looked back; I completed the loop in a little over 17 minutes for the second gold medal of the day, about a minute and a half over second place. Next up was the 5K timed trial; this race was a straight line on good road with a slight wind at our back so the times were going to be fast. I again went off first and dropped the hammer for a personal best time of 7.42 minutes, which was good enough for my third gold medal. Finally the last race was here, a one mile timed trial on a section of the 5K course. I again was first off and did my best but Fred was able to beat me by 3 seconds for the gold so I picked up my second silver medal of the day.
The event was a success, I had 3 gold medals and 2 silvers and everyone finished safely. I also want to mention that everyone was asking where Mr. Alvarez was, as Jairo signed up but didn’t make the trip. I phoned Scott at Pedal Play to check on him and found out all was fine; he couldn’t make the trip for personal reasons. It is good to know that Jairo is so liked on the Senior Olympic circuit; he has defiantly made an impact on me as well as the other competitors. Now I’m looking forward to the National Senior Olympics in Houston, Tx. in June, wish me luck!

2nd annual Ride of Silence, Baton Rouge May 18th

Many of us know someone who has been injured or killed by an inattentive driver while riding their bicycle . Please come out Wednesday, May 18th to honor the fallen and raise awareness for bicycle safety.

We will meet at 6:30 PM in the parking lot across from the vet school on the corner of Skip Bertman and River Road. The event will begin with a presentation to honor Rob Moorhead and others and then ride from 7-8. The ride will be completely silent and no more than 10 mph to accommodate all bicyclists. Helmets are required and we will give away helmets while supplies last. There will be no corking or running of intersections; either we will have a police escort or riders are expected to obey all traffic laws. Riders are asked to wear black or red armband to honor those who have died or been injured respectively. Armbands will be provided.

If for some reason you cannot make it to the ROS, please consider riding from 7-8 on Wednesday wherever you can.

Please bring the kids, encourage neighbors, and get the word out to the 'non-cycling' community; bicycle safety is something everyone should know.

The Red Bug Hill Challenge for Spina Bifida is Thursday, May 14, 2011.

The event includes cycling routes of 5, 20, 40, and 60 miles, a 5K trail run, and a 1-mile fun run. There is also an optional time trial on West Feliciana's famous
"Red Bug Hill."

Pre registration on www.active.com/running/saint-francisville-la/red-bug-hill-challenge-2011 ends at midnight, Thursday, May 12, 2011. Registriation is available on the day of the event, but it will be an extra $10.00 for cycing and $5.00 for running.

P.S. We've had several inquiries about the Mississippi River flooding that is occuring. There is no danger that our location or routes will be affected by the rising of the river.

I wish to participate in the 5K trail run plus the Red Bug Hill Challenge. If I pay the registration fee for the 5K, do I also have to pay an additional registration fee to be eligible for the Red Bud Hill Challenge. Also, how long and steep is this Hill?

There is NO EXTRA CHARGE to participate in the Red Bug Hill Challenge.

I'm going to quote for you what an experienced cyclist commented about Red Bug Hill:

Red Bug is at least .311mi. start to finish line-- or about 560yds ( I think IF I did the math correct??) with shorts sections of 3-6-8% (just my judging here) the first 200-260 ft. are some "what" flat & the last 200-260ft. /past/over the top are flat-- finish line is NOT at the summit (close but another 200ft or so I think.

An average senior citizen recreation rider from a "standing start"--- will take about 1min 12sec to 1min 15sec.(some better) depending on how high there fitness level is at the time.

For an event like this (RED BUG) 560yards & a "standing start "will favor those with high neuromuscular force/power one of the very FEW times that raw strength could have a impact on race results & those with a very high anaerobic capacity & then being able to transition (little drop off in power ) smoothly to Vo-2 max until the finish.

We would like to invite you to the Red Bug Hill Challenge for Spina bifida on May 14, 2011. This event is held in memory of our son Jordy.

The events include bike rides of 55, 40, and 22 miles; a 5K trail run, and a 1-mile fun fun. In addition, everyone has the option of entering the "Red Bug Hill Challenge," a timed event from the bottom to the top of Red Bug Hill.

Like last year, we will have good food, music, and a raffle with many nice items, including a bicycle. In 2010 we raised over $15,000.00 for children in Louisiana with Spina Bifida.

Please join us for a fun day in the beautiful hills of the Felicianas.

This year's race will be a timed stage race for all categories, expect the 5's and Jr's will be a points Omnium. There will be a Tuff Stuff award, ($300 / $200) to the winner and runner up of the 1/2/3 and Women's race.

There will also be a $1000.00 team bonus to the team who earns the most LAMBRA points for the weekend. (S3 Racing took ourselves out of the running for the team bonus.)

A few items of interest to our LAMBRA riders:

1. Criterium Championships: As you should be award, the LAMBRA Criterium championships will be held this Sunday in Lake Charles (http://www.lambra.org/calendar/2011/Contraband%20_Criterium_4.pdf). I hope to see a good turnout. The Rhino Racing team, along with Midsouth Masters, has been working hard on the new venue.
2. Joint LCCS-Texas Cup events: You may have noticed the TxBRA logo alongside the LCCS logo on the LAMBRA race calendar for the Vuelta de Acadiana July 2-3. Thanks to the efforts of Glenn Richard, this race will be scored for both LCCS points and Regional Texas Cup points this year. We’re expecting that to draw a number of teams from east Texas, so it should be fun. The reciprocal event on the Texas side of the border will most likely be the June 19 Sugar Land Criterium near Houston, which will be scored for LCCS points in addition to Texas Cup points. We will see how these jointly scored races go this year and whether we want to incorporate some guidelines and limitations (i.e. travel dist! ance) about them into the LCCS rules. If we envision more such races in neighboring states that will count toward LCCS points, it might be time to start talking about limiting the number of LCCS races that count toward a rider’s ranking for next year (i.e. top six).
3. LCCS Update: I’m hoping to get the LAMBRA LCCS points from the Mississippi Gran Prix finished up by tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. All those mixed categories make it a little more tedious than usual. As was done last year for that event, the Cat. 3/4 race will be scored based only on overall GC placing, so if the first Cat. 4 rider came in 5th, he will get 5th place points in the Cat. 4 ranking. Since the Cat. 4/5 race was an omnium, each race will be re-scored for Cat. 4 and C! at. 5, so for example the first Cat. 5 finisher in each race will get the regular road race or time trial 1st place points in the Cat. 5 ranking (Cat. 5 points do not count toward team rankings).
4. Collegiate News: I’d like to acknowledge our collegiate teams that recently finished up their South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference road seasons with lots of strong finishes against some well-established collegiate teams from Texas and Oklahoma. Congratulations to Tulane on taking home the Division II conference omnium team championship. One rider each from the LSU and Tulane teams qualified for Collegiate road nationals May 6-8 in Madison, WI. The collegiate track season will be starting up this summer and the LSU team is already planning on hosting a race at the Baton Rouge Velodrome.

Calling all Fitness Enthusiasts, Cyclists, Spinners, Communters, weekend warriors, gym rats, or those looking to start doing something, etc....
We have an event that is set for everyone to take part in, even if you only ride 5 min at a time!!!

We are trying to get as many people to help us ride 280,000 collective miles in support of the 28 million cancer survivors!
You register for $28 (only $23 if you register by Sat, April 30th), and you have to ride a minimum of 28 miles and raise a minimum of $28 (or $1-$10/mile) for LIVESTRONG.

We will mail the shirts this summer (we are still giving sponsors time to donate to get their logos on the shirt), but you have until October 2nd to log your miles!

The 2011 Mississippi Senior Olympics bicycle races

Fifty and Older,

The 2011 Mississippi Senior Olympics bicycle races will be held in Clinton, Ms. near Jackson, on May 12th, which is a Thursday. Last year they had only one 50-54 year old rider and not very many in other age groups, with 6 or 7 riders from Louisiana.

There will be a 1 mile TT, 5K TT, 10K TT, 20K RR and 40K RR, all on Thursday May 12th. You can race one or all for a $25.00 fee. Go to their website and check it out, we have to mail in the registration ASAP. You can also scan in your registration information and email it so you will make the cutoff date of May 6th, then send in a copy with your check.

“Anybody ever ride the velodrome?” Rob asked several months ago when he first walked into the bike shop where I work.

He was on his way to work just before our closing time and was kicking around an idea for a new bike. Rob looked just like many weekend riders, fairly unremarkable middle aged guy. As the months went by, he came in occasionally and looked over catalogs for Italian steel bikes and discussed the hostile riding environment in Livingston parish where he lived.

Over the course of several visits, I came to recognize Rob as a seasoned rider who was intelligent as well as risk averse. He knew his rights and at the same time knew how to make sure he was as safe as possible on the road. I learned he was a Veteran and a bagpiper with a local pipe and drum corps. I also learned that he flies medical helicopters often on the night shift, which gave him an excuse to drop-in to the shop in the evenings on his way to work.

Last week, he dropped his bike off for service, a custom titanium road bike with a well-worn leather saddle. This confirmed my suspicions that he was no Johnny-come-lately to cycling. He was training for a 1600 mile charity ride and wanted to make sure his ride was in good shape. Though Rob continued to train on a back-up bike, he called or came by every day to check and see if it was ready. We had been really backed up and every day I had to tell him, “no, not yet. I’ll let you know.” When he came by to check Monday, he brought in pamphlets and cards advertising his charity ride.

As a cyclist and piper, Rob was chosen to ride with a group on the Brotherhood Ride to honor the 411 fallen heroes who died in the line of duty at Ground Zero on 9/11. In addition to riding 60-120 miles a day from Naples, Florida to Ground Zero in New York, the group stops at memorials honoring fallen firefighters and law enforcement, and Rob would play the bagpipes in memoriam. All this was being done to raise money for nonprofits who continue to help the families these heroes left behind.

When I heard about another cyclist death, this time on LA-16 in St. Helena I was saddened as usual; every cyclist and pedestrian fatality is a tragedy, especially since so many could be easily avoided by common courtesy. It was only when I got to the shop on Thursday that I learned it was Rob. I read his name in the paper but I didn’t know the full name of every customer who hangs out at the shop. A coworker at the shop had called his house to let him know we finished tuning up his bike and spoke with Rob’s wife.

In disbelief, I went over to where his Serrota was stowed and read the name on the repair ticket.

Rob was a pretty average guy on the outside, looked like any other rider at a century ride. I had helped him most often at the shop so I wasn’t surprised when I showed the other guys his picture on the pamphlets he left the day before he died, and they said he didn’t look familiar. That was one of the things about Rob; he was pretty unassuming. He didn’t seek recognition for his charity work and only grudgingly discussed his role in the ride when guys at the shop asked him. He was more interested in talking about how he wanted to organize a ride across the state of Louisiana to honor LA’s fallen heroes.

Rob Moorhead was a retired Marine, a retired Federal Law Enforcement Officer, a piper, a AirMed3 pilot, and a husband. Riding his bike on a highway didn’t negate all of that to make him a Cyclist. Every year more bikes are sold in this country than cars, and nearly every ‘Cyclist’ I know owns and uses a car. Why we as a society feel the need to use labels to differentiate ‘Drivers’ from ‘Cyclists’ and treat each other different based on these arbitrary transient brandings to justify poor behavior, I don’t know.

What I do know is a pretty extraordinary member of society was tragically lost before I got a chance to get to know him better. He served his country, served and protected us, and transported people with medical emergencies, and he paid the ultimate price for simply riding his bike.

I hope everyone will consider helping me honor him and thousands like him who have died or been injured at the hands of careless people who often focused too much on texting or making up time and not enough on the road. The 2011 Baton Rouge Ride of Silence will be May 18th beginning from the parking lot across from the Vet School. Before we ride we will honor Rob and others who have been killed or injured with a song by the Caledonian pipe and drum corps at 6:30 and other events as yet to be determined. The ride rolls at 7 PM and will be a silent funeral procession no faster than a rider on a cruiser bike can ride comfortably.
